I’ve tried to write this caption many times over – I kid you not – the past few months. When I realized it was coming up on five years since Death of a Cheerleader, I knew I wanted to do *something* – say *something*, but nothing I wrote felt adequate. “This album changed my life”, was always the first sentence that came to mind – likely, because I employ this phrase every time Death of a Cheerleader hits a milestone – or I’d find myself tracing over some vague “highs and lows” without elaborating; nets wide enough to encompass every feeling and broad enough to obfuscate good, bad and in-between. While *yes*, the album did change my life and *yes* there were both highs and lows, writing about it that way felt intentionally elusive. I used to bristle slightly when people called DoaC a coming-of-age record — I was just shy of twenty-four by the time it came out — but in some ways it’s true. In attempting to write a heartfelt caption, I ended up writing a whopping ten page essay about my entire life leading up to its creation —analyzing my relationship with the Cheerleader archetype as a whole; from the childhood feelings of inadequacy that lead to my fascination with it, through the genesis of Pom Pom Squad, and beyond. I’ve gone back and forth about whether or not to share my essays, but have decided ultimately to make a substack account (linked) that I’ll be posting my first one to in the next few days. As I’m meeting myself again in the aftermath of so much upheaval, I figured why not re-introduce myself to you, too. In the meantime, I’ll be hopping on ig live tomorrow, 6/26 at 6PM EST to talk a bit more about the album and auction off some archive merch! If you’re reading this, you may be someone who found me because of Death of a Cheerleader. From the bottom of my heart thank you for listening. Thank you for caring and for sticking around ♡ making music is my favorite thing in the world and I’m so proud to have made something that has reached you.

Mirror Starts Moving Without Me is out now ♡

Tomorrow I’m 29 and today my first substack essay is finally out ♡ I was inspired by the industry adage “you have your whole life to write your first album and a year to write your second”. In this essay, I’m focusing on the former half of the sentiment (essay on the latter half later) and talking about my life leading up to the release of Death of a Cheerleader — being a spooky kid, writing my first songs, how I became obsessed with the cheerleader archetype and moreeee. This one’s reallllyy personal (tw eating disorders, sexual harassment) - love u v much . ⋆౨ৎ˚⟡˖ ࣪

“I often joke that I was a haunted child. My favorite song from the earliest age I can remember was The Beatles “Eleanor Rigby” which Shelby clowns me for whenever the conversation comes up – as a kid she found the song terrifying.“

“I harbored a secret hope that its magic would rub off on me – that I’d be subtly transformed like when the weird girl in a rom-com takes off her glasses only to reveal she’s been stunningly beautiful behind them all along. Instead I just felt like my body was wrong — un-disciplined and soft where it should be taut, stout where it should be long and lean – like if the uniform was the setup, my body in it was the punchline.”

“When I stepped onto the stage, something overtook me – a kind of self assuredness I’d never felt in my life. The voice that projected into the small crowd seemed so different from my own. Commanding and clear and confident.”

I used to bristle slightly when people called DoaC a coming-of-age record (I was just shy of twenty-four by the time it came out) but in retrospect, I can acknowledge some level of truth. I was coming into my own.
