This Matariki, we invite our community to gather beneath the stars to connect, create, share kai, and enjoy kōrero together.

Across a series of community activations, we'll honour the past, celebrate the present, and look ahead to the future through the guiding principles of Matariki.

What a truly special night! To everyone who joined us at the Hui Kōrero Under the Stars - Matariki Night Market - THANK YOU! Seeing Avondale Art Park filled with laughter, kōrero, music and creativity was something truly special. You showed up in force to celebrate Matariki, reminding us what this season is all about: coming together, honouring those who came before us, celebrating the present, and looking ahead with hope. ✨

A huge shout out to our performers @baileywiley and @melodownz , DJ @alannagabrielle_ for keeping the vibes flowing all night, and our phenomenal MC TK White, whose energy and effortless hosting brought the evening together and a special thanks to Cr Paterson-Hamlin for helping us open the night!

Ngā mihi to @_chloeemayy for sharing the beautiful art of raranga and fundraising raffle, and to @berst_1 and the AUDO team for creating unforgettable moments through the community Affirmation Walls. Thanks also to @theopenfort for the Matariki star hunt, which was an absolute hit with the tamariki! ⭐

To our amazing kai vendors, creative stallholders, volunteers and lighting extraordinaires who transformed Avondale Art Park into a magical place beneath the stars - thank you for sharing your time, talent and aroha!

✨ Hui Kōrero, under the stars ✨

Workshopping with @haser_nz at @hollywoodavondale

Today we kicked off our Matariki celebrations with our very first activation, a Whetū Workshop.

Haser created a beautiful concept that encouraged bold, vibrant colour, layered creativity, and a little touch of magic with a second glow-in-the-dark layer. 🌟 It was so special watching everyone make each whetū their own.

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped us begin this Matariki season together.

GREAT ART ON MAIN 🪟🏡💫
New artwork by Tracey Tawhiao honours Hui Koorero - a site of gathering and speaking. Tawhiao layers colour, pattern, and symbol to let many voices breathe through Avondale’s main street. 🌺

Ika glide through currents of red, pink, and gold, carrying threads of unity, while white linework wraps the glass in pathways of connection - a visual whakapapa of people, place, and wairua. 🌕🐟🐠

Here, Te Ao Mārama rises in everyday space and finds form in the heart of Avondale, transforming everyday space into a site of renewal and joy. The work celebrates creative expression as collective healing, inviting passers-by to pause, reflect, and remember the beauty that lives among us. 🌊✨

Tracey Tawhiao (Ngāi Te Rangi, Whakatōhea, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) is a contemporary Māori artist and artivist whose multidisciplinary practice transforms language, form, and colour into pathways of connection and awareness.

Free Art Workshop 🎨 going down at @avondalestreetsessions

Artist: @holly___rock the creative behind the Canal Reserve mural has designed custom wooden pieces just for you ❤️‍🔥

You’ll be painting your own 3D AVONDALE cut-out to take home, while being part of a creative day out in the neighbourhood.

Come along to the very first @avondalestreetsessions and get creative with a hands-on workshop led by @siah_finai who will guide you through painting GOGO birds made from MDF cut-outs. No bookings required!

You’re then invited to weave and place your piece along the painted walls and perimeter of Art Park, adding your voice to an ever growing installation in the heart of Avondale. ❤️‍🔥

Siah will also be crafting large-scale works for the Great Art on Main collaboration with @audoakl bringing a sweep of vibrant new energy to Avondale’s streetscape and extending beyond the workshop! ✨

🎨 Tawck GBAK / Earnest Bradley is a Māori artist from Ngāpuhi. Blending art with everyday life. His work draws on heritage, movement, and connection. Through public art, Earnest creates landmarks that reflect shared experiences and belonging.

When you’re strolling Avondale Main-street make sure to stop and feel the mauri ☺️✨
