The contemporary ideal of footwear is shaped by high-performance models made from complex, barely separable material composites. Inspired by Träskor, Klompen, and Geta, a flat wooden sole is given flexibility through carefully positioned cuts. The production of the bathing and sauna shoe can be decentralized and carried out in local carpentry workshops, opening up new connections between design, craftsmanship, and use.

Building on the research project “prototyping footprints” at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle @burg_labs, ponton works, in collaboration with @dukta_flexible_wood, explores how traditional wooden footwear can be reimagined through digital technologies.

Admit it. It’s driving you crazy. A rug keeps getting pushed around by the door until it finally blocks it altogether. Followed by pulling harder on the handle or awkwardly dragging the rug back into place. What a fuzz!

This small everyday frustration inspired a slightly modified object that rests calmly on the floor, gently reminding us that things are often less dramatic than they first appear. The carpet doorstop softly slows down and holds the door open due to its wedge-shaped pile length.

pulping+ investigates the potential of plant-based cellulose fibres for high-quality everyday products. These can be processed into three-dimensional objects using both industrial fibre casting and DIY methods.

In this two- to five-day workshop, we provide insights into the development and manufacturing process of fibre casting technology and, together with design students, explore the intersection of design, materials research and applied circular economy. In the first of these workshops, we were able to experiment with various plant fibres alongside students of @industrialdesignlinz departement from the @kunstunilinz, transforming previously unused material streams into application-oriented material studies. Following our analysis of these, we ventured a glimpse into the future: what if renewable raw materials would flow within regional systems? How must products be designed to enable circularity? In doing so, we built up an understanding of materials and technology whilst exploring the potential of circular design.
