Teaching in the Age of AI: Augmenting Student Clinical Reasoning

The conference itself is in person, but my session is virtual during the Program Directors’ Meeting.

Background: Our students are building clinical reasoning they will use unassisted, in front of real patients, for decades. What happens to that reasoning when AI is available for every assignment along the way?

The research is starting to answer it, and the answer is not to ban the tools. It is that sequence matters. Students who do their own thinking first and bring AI in second build judgment that holds up when the tool is taken away. Students who lean on it from the start can finish the assignment, feel more confident than ever, and still not have built the reasoning the credential is meant to certify.

So this is a session about teaching design, not about restrictions. What to change in an assignment so AI strengthens clinical reasoning instead of quietly standing in for it.

If you are a program director and you will be in that meeting, I would genuinely rather hear what you are wrestling with in your own curriculum than talk only about what I think should be happening.

Hi, I'm Pooja.

I'm a double-board-certified occupational therapist and gerontologist, and I built The OT Algorithm to fill a gap.

My background is in acute care at a major trauma hospital. I know what it's like to have 15 minutes to make a clinical impact inside a sea of complex systems.

I've also spent a decade mentoring and teaching, so I know the invisible workload of curriculum, syllabi, assignments, and weekly lectures. And as a private practice owner, I understand the administrative burden that quietly fuels burnout.

Here's the part that surprises people. I immersed myself in generative AI not to replace OTPs, but to protect them.

Used responsibly, AI can offload the tasks that drain time and energy, so OTPs can reinvest in judgment, connection, and care.

One landmark study found that strained caregivers have a 63% higher risk of dying when compared to their peers who aren't caregiving at all.

However, it's not the caregiving that increases that risk.

It's the strain associated with the tasks involved in caregiving.
