POOLS, located in Dali, Yunnan, is an exciting electronic music club that quickly gained popularity since its launch in January 2022. With its modern digital beats and meticulously designed acoustic space, POOLS has transformed the local music scene, becoming a favored destination for electronic music enthusiasts.

A new listening space is taking shape in Dali Old Town.

Together with QingZuo, POOLS is exploring a different side of listening — beyond the dancefloor, at a slower pace.

A space for ambient, dub, house, vinyl and sounds that move somewhere in between. A place where music, people and the atmosphere of the old town can meet naturally.

After last night at QingZuo Listening Space in Dali Old Town, Daniel Brandt and Paul Frick of German trio Brandt Brauer Frick join us at POOLS tonight for the second night of the National Day holiday.

Since 2008, Brandt Brauer Frick have brought acoustic instruments and ensemble playing into techno, exploring the relationship between intricate composition and physical groove. Their DJ-Kicks mix for !K7 extends that approach into selection, drawing connections across house, techno and experimental electronics. The dancefloor has always been part of their musical language, even as their work has expanded into concert halls and orchestral settings.

Tonight, that connection comes into focus at POOLS. Following four hours in a listening space, we look forward to hearing how Daniel and Paul respond to a club room—the pacing of the music, the weight of a rhythm and the exchange between selectors and dancers. Architech joins them behind the decks.

Beijing label Flaeming joins us at POOLS for the first night of the National Day holiday, with LIUYANG, Shengchou and Qing taking turns behind the decks.

A longstanding presence in China’s underground rave scene, LIUYANG works across radio, labels and post-punk bands. Alongside BeijingCityRadio, Need!Music and Flaeming, his musical life extends well beyond the DJ booth—a perspective shaped by years of playing clubs across China, Asia and Europe.

Flaeming’s Shengchou draws on fashion and everyday experience, pairing a sensitivity to texture with selections that stay close to the body. Joining them from Nanning is Qing, founder of Hope Club and The Mood, whose work has helped sustain the city’s electronic music community.

From Beijing’s radio and independent music networks to Nanning’s clubs and parties, three distinct paths meet in Dali. For the opening night of the holiday, we give them the room to connect those experiences through music.

We begin the National Day holiday in Dali Old Town with Daniel Brandt and Paul Frick, two members of German trio Brandt Brauer Frick, joining us at QingZuo Listening Space.

Since forming in 2008, Brandt Brauer Frick have explored the possibilities of building techno from acoustic instruments, bringing intricate rhythms and ensemble playing into club music. Their work has grown from the trio to larger ensembles and orchestral settings. Their DJ-Kicks mix for !K7 reveals a parallel curiosity behind the decks, connecting their approach to composition with the wider world of records and club culture.

At QingZuo, Daniel and Paul will play for four hours—a chance to hear that musical perspective unfold through selection, pacing and the changing atmosphere of the room.

Donn, founder of Singapore’s BASSIS Asia, and our own Architech provide the afternoon’s music before Daniel and Paul take over at 19:00. Our fifth Listening Space test session takes us from afternoon into night.

NATIONAL DAY AT POOLS
Seven nights. One dancefloor.
30 September — 6 October · Dali

For the National Day holiday, we bring together DJs and musicians from across cities, labels and generations for seven nights at POOLS. Singapore’s Donn, a longstanding connector of Asia’s underground scenes, opens the week alongside Gong and Milknee. On 1 October, Beijing’s FLAEMING takes over, with founder LIUYANG joined by ShengChou and Qing for a label showcase.

German trio Brandt Brauer Frick, known for reworking techno through acoustic instrumentation, step into the booth for a DJ set, with Architech also on the bill. Mickey Zhang, a pioneering figure in China’s club culture, returns alongside Noside and Wave. Across the week, 11AN, LIULIU, DongDong, AB, AALIEN, GHOST, NOIZOME, BADSTONE, Lunarescape and Xx bring their own selections and perspectives to the room.

House, disco and broken beats meet minimal, electro, UK bass and techno, with each night finding its own direction. Expect warm, supple grooves, intricate rhythms and deeper bass pressure as the week unfolds. Different histories behind the decks, a shared connection on the floor.

A full moon, and Charles Moon at Qingzuo. This Mid-Autumn Festival, he joins us in Dali Old Town.

Originally from Austin and now based in Mexico City, Moon is a DJ, producer and the founder of Thank You For Sweating (TYFS), a party series and label that brings artists together. His sets move between soulful House and deeper grooves, leaving space for the room to find its own rhythm. He has also played Berghain’s Panorama Bar.

DJ Wife joins him, alongside Architech from the POOLS crew. We’re still finding the right sound for this old building. For our fourth sound test, come take a seat and listen with us.

The Mid-Autumn holiday begins at POOLS with Charles Moon.

Originally from Austin and now based in Mexico City, Moon is a DJ, producer and curator whose work extends beyond his own sets. He founded Thank You For Sweating (TYFS), a party series and label that brings artists together on the dancefloor. He has also played Berghain’s Panorama Bar.

Tonight, he joins the POOLS crew for a night of House by the Xi’er River.

After our first two sound tests, it became increasingly clear that, within an old building like this, controlling how sound travels beyond the room is just as important as how it is experienced inside it.

For the past two weeks, QINGZUO Listening Space has remained closed while further sound isolation and acoustic adjustments were made. This Saturday, the room reopens in a new state.

For the third test, we welcome Federico Molinari to Dali Old Town. Closely associated with the Frankfurt and Mannheim minimal scenes, Federico co-founded OSLO Records with Nekes and has spent the past two decades developing a distinctive approach to house music through records, groove and subtle shifts in rhythm and space, with POOLS CREW joining him for the night.

Unlike Federico’s club set at POOLS the following night, Saturday at QINGZUO Listening Space will place the focus more directly on listening: a slower encounter with his selections, and with the sound of a room we are continuing to understand.

This Saturday, Bristol-based DJ severine joins us at POOLS for CHAMA PROJECT #45.

Taking its name from the ancient Tea Horse Road, CHAMA PROJECT is an ongoing POOLS series built around movement and exchange through music, connecting Dali with independent scenes from different cities.

Drawing from Bristol’s experimental club scene and soundsystem culture, severine’s sets move between broken techno, dubbed-out bass, electro, rave and contemporary club sounds, with warped percussion, metallic textures and deep low-end running throughout.

She hosts a monthly show on Noods Radio and runs forma, a Bristol-based event series and label. Recent appearances include fabric, Razzmatazz, Motion, Strange Brew and Love Inn, while her Seasoning Mix was selected as Resident Advisor’s Mix of the Day.

Seoul-based JIMIN joins us at POOLS for the first time this Saturday.

Originally coming from a background in acting and performance, his approach to DJing is built around atmosphere, timing and a close reading of the room. Rather than staying within a fixed genre, his sets move through Minimal, Tech House, Progressive, Electro and Dub, shifting naturally with the energy of the floor.

Now a resident at Hertz and founder of Patchwork, JIMIN has become part of a new generation shaping Seoul’s underground club culture through both DJing and independent event work.

For his first night at POOLS, he is joined by Kunming’s DEADMAN and our longtime friend AALIEN.
