Examining the music & singers that used to live on the charts with a little sarcasm & snark thrown in.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Chandra Davis (or London Charles) is most known to fans as @iamsodeelishis , the nickname she received from Flavor Flav when participating on his dating show in 2006. Deelishis ended up winning the show and briefly had the Public Enemy hype man as her boyfriend - which sounds like an absolutely horrible prize. She followed up this adventure with a second reality TV series, I Love Money, but her season never aired due to another participant’s murder investigation. How wonderful…

Deelishis branched out into other territories following her heyday on TV including hosting, acting, modeling and music video appearances. After more than a decade, she returned to VH1 with Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta and Couples Retreat. But why was she on a series about rapping/singing? Well, one of her other territories included singing. While it’s extremely hard to find her music online, she released four standalone singles with ‘Rumpshaker,’ ‘Groove with You,’ ‘The Movement’ and ‘Set It Off.’

None of Deelishis’ music gained any traction and, in my opinion, I think part of the reason for that is because the tracks didn’t do anything to show off her true talent. I mean, look at this clip. Why sing indie R&B pop when you can sound like ***THIS***? She can BLOW! She should have been belting or doing gospel or like… anything else. Deelishis hasn’t released any new music since 2010, but if she does, I want her back as a powerhouse.

2003 was a great year for Jpop, a strong precursor to Kpop, and part of that is thanks to Final Fantasy X-2 helping it become mainstream in America. The video game series, arguably one of the most popular RPGs of all time, used a song called ‘Real Emotion’ as the opening theme to Final Fantasy X-2. I’ve never even played this installment, but I’m super familiar with the track.

Depending which version you listen to, ‘Real Emotion’ is sung by @kodakumi_official in Japan and @villalon1980 in America. However, Kumi Koda’s version is the most popular. Released under Rhythm Zone Records, ‘Real Emotion’ was not a hit worldwide - even though it’s catchy AF - but it did manage to reach the Top 3 in Japan.

The song served as a single off Koda Kumi’s album, ‘Grow Into One,’ prior to blowing up as part of Final Fantasy X-2. It’s also important to note that Koda voiced one of the characters in the video game, only furthering her contribution to the ‘Real Emotion’ legacy.

It’s funny how your perspective can be completely different from reality. Back in 1995, I was just 7 years old and assumed this song was a massive hit in America - solely based on the number of times I watched Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. Looking at the chart data from that time now, ‘Trouble’ by pop-punk duo Shampoo did well internationally but was overlooked in the US despite its promotion with the @powerrangers brand.

Shampoo was comprised of Jacqui Blake and Carrie Askew, who supposedly came up with the name of their duo after using the stereotypical excuse to turn down a date - “sorry, I have to shampoo my hair tonight.” The English singers released their debut album, ‘We Are Shampoo,’ in 1994 via Food Records, which is now recognized as EMI. ‘Trouble’ was its lead single and it reached number 8 in Finland, number 11 in the UK and number 17 in Australia.

Shampoo went on to release three more albums and achieved five Top 40 hits in the UK and Japan before calling it quits in 2001. What was supposed to be a break, according to a 2019 with Q Magazine, turned into a final curtain call for the duo as they quite simply never picked up the microphone again… much to the dismay of their fans. Uh oh, they’re in trouble…

Drop an emoji related to England if you remember soul singer @duffy. The Grammy Winning crooner took the world by storm in 2008 when she released ‘Mercy.’ Serving as the second single from her debut album, ‘Rockferry,’ A&M saw immediate success with ‘Mercy’ and the rest is music history.

‘Mercy’ peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 16 on Billboard Adult Pop and number 4 on Billboard Adult Alternative. It took the number 1 spot in her home-country England as well as thirteen other countries around the world. It’s currently certified Platinum in America and 2-times Platinum in the UK.

Duffy released several other singles and another album after the success of ‘Mercy,’ but none of it was nearly as monumental - although the proceeding material did do well. Unfortunately, due to some rather tragic and harrowing events, Duffy took a long hiatus from the music industry but returned to live performing in July 2026.

Here’s hoping she’s doing well.

And damn the opening to ‘Mercy’ is still so iconic.

@laurieanngibson Gibson is a world-renowned dancer and choreographer. When I say she’s worked with everyone, I mean she’s worked with EVERYONE. Brandy, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, JoJo, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Missy Elliot, Nicki Minaj and my favorite girl group of all-time @danitykane. There’s no question as to why she’s an Emmy, MTV VMA and Teen Choice nominee.

She’s also, unfortunately, an unsuccessful pop star. After gaining even more recognition for her role as choreographer and judge on Making the Band, Laurieann Gibson attempted to parlay this newfound fame into a singing career. The first single she released is titled ‘Addictive,’ and it was definitely a part of my college playlist back in 2008. While it did go platinum in my dorm, it basically failed everywhere else.

‘Addictive’ is a fun pop, dance and R&B hybrid. I don’t care that Laurieann Gibson doesn’t have top tier vocals because the song is catchy. Maybe because it was released independently, ‘Addictive’ is just missing SOMETHING that I can’t quite put my finger on. Luckily, the lackluster rollout of ‘Addictive’ didn’t stall her career, and Gibson has continued to find success as a reality TV star and competition judge.

If the producers of Saved by the Bell released this as an actual single, I bet it would have become a big hit. Man, I watched Saved by the Bell every morning while getting ready for middle school and high school, and they played season two episode nine Jessie’s Song all the time - probably due to the “I’m so excited, I’M SO EXCITED, I’m - So - SCAAAARED” viral moment.

Jessie’s Song finds Bayside’s favorite trio, Kelly (Tiffani-Amber Thiessen), Jessie (Elizabeth Berkeley) and Lisa (Lark Voorhies), as they try to launch their fictional girl group called Hot Sundae. They’re preparing for their big debut which may lead to a recording contract, but gasp, they also need to study for midterms. This leads Jessie to abusing caffeine pills, double gasp, and the rest is pop culture history.

Hot Sundae’s song, ‘Go For It,’ is pretty catchy and fits in perfectly with the sound and aesthetic of the early 90s. I haven’t seen an episode of Saved by the Bell since probably 2010, but ‘Go For It’ still slaps harder than Zack Morris slapping Jessie back into reality from her caffeine induced hysterics. Let’s take a look back at their iconic music video and applaud this fictional girl group.

I know this one is going to tug on a few people’s heartstrings. Selena is one of the most prolific singers to have commanded the stage, even though her journey was tragically cut short. One of my favorite songs by the late, 3x Grammy Award Winner is ‘I Could Fall in Love.’ It’s spurred so many remarkable covers on YouTube while also remaining a beautiful, poignant piece of music.

‘I Could Fall in Love’ was used as a promotional single for Selena’s fifth studio album, ‘Dreaming of You,’ which was released by EMI Latin in 1995. Despite not being one of her bigger hits, it later gained popularity and acclaim when it was featured in her 1997 biopic starring Jennifer Lopez. Both the song and its accompanying album were released just three months after her death.

‘I Could Fall in Love’ peaked at number 2 on Billboard Hot Latin, number 5 on Billboard Rhythmic, number 12 on Billboard Adult Contemporary and number 17 on Billboard Pop. The song currently has 114,000,000 streams on Spotify and 87,000,000 views on YouTube - which says a lot considering her music came out long before streaming. ‘I Could Fall in Love’ has been certified Gold in America.

One of our unofficial contributors, @thescreamqueer, suggested that I cover Sarai (now known as Miss Eighty 6). Since I love discovering talent from decades ago, I decided to give it a shot and I was not disappointed. Although I was also slightly horrified by reading about any singer with the nickname Feminem - as in the female version of Eminem. Luckily, her story has a happy ending

Sarai made history in 2003 as the first white female rapper to be signed to a major label (Epic). Her first single, ‘Ladies,’ was almost a major hit. It missed out on the Billboard Hot 100 by one spot, but managed to reach number 19 on Billboard Pop and number 28 on Billboard Rhythmic. It also randomly appeared on the overall chart in Australia and New Zealand.

Her debut album, ‘The Original,’ was not as successful, unfortunately. It barely cracked the Billboard Top 200, coming in at number 187 its first week out. Sarai was dropped by Epic a few months later, but that’s where the fun really began. She re-emerged as Miss Eighty 6 and has sang/produced dozens of songs for film and television soundtracks including Fantastic Four, Gossip Girl, Little Fockers and Into the Spider-Verse.

Although it’s not said enough, @smashmouthofficial was a pretty big rock band from 1997 to 2001. They have six hit songs under their belt, but ‘All Star’ is by far my favorite. It was released in 1999 via @interscope and to this day, almost 28 years later, I can still recite the whole thing word for word, from start to finish. Does that make me an ‘All Star?’

Serving as the second single from their second album, ‘Astro Lounge,’ Smash Mouth eventually became Grammy Nominees when ‘All Star’ reached the masses. In America, it peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 5 on Billboard Adult Alternative and number 1 on Billboard Pop Airplay. Internationally, it peaked within the Top 20 in eight different countries.

‘All Star’ is currently certified 3-times Platinum for sales of over 3,000,000, but I think that number needs to be adjusted. This song has been used in literally hundreds of film and television soundtracks including Cold Case, Dexter, My Little Pony and Shrek. Even though former lead singer Steve Harwell died in 2023, I have no doubt ‘All Star’ will continue to be a song that withstands the passage of time.

There’s a song about ketchup, or well, there’s a song where ketchup is the title. Realistically, ‘The Ketchup Song’ is about an attractive guy in the club and a kind of tell all to stay away from him. Chosen as the lead single from their debut album, Hijas del Tomate, the track was released by the girl group… oh, also named @lasketchup_official Does ketchup have a deeper meaning in Spanish that I’m just not understanding or…?

Anyway, Las Ketchup released ‘The Ketchup Song’ in 2002 via Columbia Records. Despite all the foolishness surrounding their name, the song title and its accompanying album, ‘The Ketchup Song’ was a surprise hit around the globe. It peaked at number 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 and took the number 1 spot on Billboard Hot Latin and Latin Pop. It also reached number 1 in over 25 countries worldwide and made Las Ketchup Latin Grammy Nominees.

They didn’t do too much outside of ‘The Ketchup Song.’ Sure, they released a second album and single in 2006 about bloody marys (the drink, not the killer) - so not quite about ketchup but still featuring tomatoes. By then the shtick was over and they broke up soon after, so now Las Ketchup reunites every few years for a surprise performance of ‘The Ketchup Song.’ And I can’t stop wondering what they do for a living in their everyday lives when not singing about… all that.

When I’m cruising around, I don’t care what’s on the radio or my Spotify. But you know who does? Former Grammy Nominee @thisisnivea , she’ll take a steering wheel lock to your knee caps if you touch her dashboard. The popular but incredibly underrated singer burst onto the scene in 2000 when she featured on Mystikal’s ‘Danger (Been So Long)’ track, which led to her scoring a record deal with Jive.

Nivea released ‘Don’t Mess with the Radio’ as the first single from her self-titled debut album in 2001. It peaked at number 90 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 85 on Billboard Hip-Hop and randomly reached number 14 in Australia - where it’s Gold certified for sales of over 500,000. Criminally, ‘Don’t Mess with the Radio’ only has 600,000 streams on Spotify and 2,000,000 views on YouTube.

Realistically, it should be much more than that, but ‘Don’t Mess with the Radio’ is often overshadowed by a future single ‘Don’t Mess with My Man,’ which became her first Top 10 hit and earned Nivea her Grammy Nomination. I may be in the minority here, but I’ve always preferred ‘Radio’ to ‘My Man.’ Here’s hoping for an epic Nivea comeback in 2027 because I haven’t heard much from her since The Encore.

PS: Face card is LETHAL in this video.

Kendra Wilkinson was a mainstay in reality TV for over a decade, most noticeably from her kickstart during E’s The Girls Next Door. With over nine different shows under her belt - and four Playboy covers - this meant that she had some major spending money in the bank. One of the side careers she attempted to launch was a very short but disastrous romp in the world of music.

Kendra released her first - and so far only - single titled ‘Lost in Space’ in 2016 through Prometheus Entertainment. Spliced with footage from the 1960s TV series with the same name, ‘Lost in Space’ is a rather strange EDM-rap song that has basically nothing to do with being lost or being in space. And truly its only downfall is due to a complete lack of clear direction and production.

Had Kendra sang the entire song in the same key as the chorus, it would have been much more pleasant on the ears. And a music video taking place in a club or at a party would have served it more justice than alien robots in space. One can see why today, after almost a decade, ‘Lost in Space,’ has only amassed 35,000 streams on Spotify and 42,000 views on YouTube.

Kendra is currently enjoying a life outside the limelight while she works as a realtor. At least she's not lost in the unemployment line?
