Ahi Tāmau: Māreikura Whakaahua ӏ Slow Burn: Women and Photography & New Zealand Photography Collected.

So excited to be part of Slow Burn with my photobook New Folk in the Ancestor Technologies part of the exhibition and associated publication. My photobook is a tribute to women’s work and the bringing of culture forward post war.

A privilege to be alongside my female and non-binary Whānau many long un-or little-recognised for their large contribution to photography in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Some B and W to pare things back with so much noise going on at the moment. Really enjoyed hearing @alexcartagenamex speaking with @sashawolfprojects on @photowork.foundation podcast- thanks @lissamitchell1900 for sharing - really great discussion on what photography is and how it brings our attention to things by sustained looking/witnessing. And also about AI and how photography practitioners are ideally placed to be considering what is occurring and what it means for photography and representation. The #GroundRules exhibition at @sfmoma curated by @lopesshana is on till April 26.

A quick scan over some of my hundreds of mini photograms/experiments -wondered whether to put these in the Analogue exhibition at Massey this year but erred on the side of caution using my silver gelatin Kodak velox prints - another time I hope to show these together. Wishing you a kind, kindred and creative 2026. For me it will involve more teaching, family and hopefully the opportunity to spend more time in dark spaces with light, listening and learning.

Thinking about abstraction and overlaying of experience and addition/subtraction.

Looking at satellite imagery of river deltas such as the Lena River Delta in Siberia.

New work from this week. Many imprints of objects in one image. Thinking about all the great stimulus from the last week - two great writers/readers events @verb_wellington (Objects as Treasures and Bad Diaries) and guest curator talk @citygallerywellington @andrea_schlieker @corneliaparkerartist and my teaching work - seeing how students take on ideas and add their own to them make them even more complex and relevant. Also how we construct meaning - at all ages and with our connections to people, places and things. Also reading @megandunnwrites her childhood family of toys that accompanied her various moves.
