What a night. From the intro video to @bonnieraittofficial ‘s induction to @brandicarlile ‘s acceptance speech and the most kick-ass band at the top of their game — and Brandi’s perfect, perfect voice, singing songs with so much heart, soul, and deep emotion — it was so special to be in that room, bearing witness to her well-deserved recognition. The euphoric hugs and bows at the end were just icing.
Thanks, @acltv @coakley_maureen and everyone who makes it possible for me to have the privilege of being in the room for the many incredible musical moments I’ve experienced thanks to this singular show.
And now, we need a @sistastrings taping! by @popscribe

Here’s the fabulous @mollytuttle playing Wednesday night at Antone’s in Austin — with and without wig, and definitely with shiny new diamond signaling her Thanksgiving engagement to Old Crow Medicine Show’s Ketch Secor, which she’s wearing on her right hand so it doesn’t impede her playing.
And that last shot is me presenting her with Folk Alliance International’s International Folk Music Award for Song of the Year in 2018. The song was “You Didn’t Call My Name.” But it was called that night, and many times since. Later that year, she won an Americana Music Award for Instrumentalist of the Year (following two International Bluegrass Music Association wins for Guitar Player of the Year), and won Grammys in 2023 and 2024 for Best Bluegrass Album. She’s nominated for two more this year — for Best Americana Album (for “So Long Little Miss Sunshine”) and Best Americana Performance (for the song, “That’s Gonna Leave a Mark”).
It’s been fun watching her star rise; she’s an extraordinary talent with oodles of stage presence — and an incredible band of women picking alongside her.

I’ve seen Prince. I’ve seen Tina Turner. I’ve seen peak-era(s) Rolling Stones. I’ve seen Springsteen over 20 times (I know; only 20?) and seen Brandi Carlile in small venues. I saw Etta James’ ACL taping. I’ve seen hundreds of artists who rock my world (R.E.M., Elvis Costello, Beck, John Fullbright, Allison Russell, Rhiannon Giddens, the Police, Janelle Monae, Stevie Wonder, to name just a few), most of them multiple times. But nobody brings it quite like Jon Batiste. There’s nobody to even compare him to; his talent is so vast, it’s hard to fathom how one human can manifest that much musical brilliance — and share it in a way that leaves people so filled with joy, they practically float out of the venue after he plays.
Tonight at his second @acltv taping, he played Beethoven, blues, soul, jazz, rock, Dylan … he duetted with Andra Day and performed his Beyonce collaboration, “American Requiem.” He danced like a rubber-band man and played half the instruments onstage: piano, melodica, guitar, saxophone, percussion and possibly drums (it was hard to keep track — and there were a LOT of instruments and people up there). He rapped; he sang a love song to his wife, who was in the audience and looked great (her leukemia is in remission again). He talked about love and light and not locking up immigrants, and at the end of a mind-blowing night, led a New Orleans-style second-line big-band parade through the entire venue, including the second balcony, playing “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
Along the way, he hugged or shook hands with as many people as he could. I thanked him and told him I loved his spirit, and went over to his wife, Suleika Jaouad, who was standing in a nearby row (everybody was standing, as they’d been for most of the night), told her how much we needed his joy, and thanked her for sharing him with us.
I thought his first “Austin City Limits” taping was one of the best I’d ever witnessed. This one was even better — one of the best shows I’ve ever experienced, anywhere. by @popscribe

Congratulations to My Morning Jacket on their induction into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame. They put on a hall-of-fame worthy show tonight. I only hope it’s not one of the last ones we’ll see.
We cannot let PBS and NPR die. We need them too much. Jim James said tonight that the first time he saw “Austin City Limits” was the first time he realized actual humans could make music. Previously, he thought it was all done by Muppets.
Think about that. A poor Kentucky kid’s earliest exposure to music came from “Sesame Street,” then matured with “Austin City Limits” (Johnny Cash happened to be first artist he saw). A few decades later, his band joins ACL’s hall of fame.
PBS and NPR help kids form dreams, and help make them come true. They inform us, inspire us and entertain us. How can we let a wretched gang of self-serving Republicans take that away from us?
If you have money to give, please do. But also scream loudly and often at those who think our tax dollars shouldn’t go to entities that have endlessly enriched so many, with no subscriptions needed. They’re called public television and public radio for a reason. They belong to us — and should not be taken away. by @popscribe
