Although I’ve resolutely given away new year resolutions, we have high hopes for what Port Farm will become, not just for our family but every person who passes through the door and feels the magic of time and space stretching out before them; all the way to where the Southern Ocean meets the sky.

To this week find that hope beautifully captured in photographs by @gemmola and in words by Rachel White in the pages of @countrystylemag was very special. A little surreal even. Every little detail, every conversation and every text message and email from the past five years that turned this hare-brained idea to build a house completely reliant on sunshine and rainfall on top of a hill in a paddock into a home. A home that is an extension of all the things we love and a home we can now proudly share with others. In that way, Port Farm was never just about us, and to get to where we are now we leant on many talented and hardworking people.

From the early days of finding courage to stay true to what we wanted this place to feel like with Sarah from @thehostingmasterclass and finalising drawings with Mark from @mpaastudio to Craig Irving’s team’s patience to build in such an extreme location, Amy and the @mainehouseinteriors team for pushing us to be bolder, Kerry from @accessibleaccommodation for practical guidance to give more people the opportunity to have a holiday with their loved ones, and @renatafairhallgardendesigns and Sean from Terang Landscaping for at the last hour enthusiastically bridging the gap between house and paddock.

There’s also a host of local trades, family and friends who have for the better left their mark on Port Farm, making this house that first appears to be a shed, a safe harbour in a wild world that is very very hard to leave.

Today, a new chapter began at the Twelve Apostles.

If you’ve ever stayed with us, you’d know how much we believe in taking the time to slow down and experience the magic this incredible part of the world offers when you have enough time here to catch your breath; from the force of the wild Southern Ocean to the wispy soft sunrises with a cup of tea in hand.

We also only pass on recommendations that we have experienced ourselves and this morning’s vast blue skies and cotton wool clouds made walking into the new Keerray Woorroong Visitor Centre and along the track to the Twelve Apostles lookouts that little bit extra special.

It’s not easy to admit, but Port Cottage and Port Farm wouldn’t be possible without Richard.

He is the backbone to keeping the wheels turning and sometimes he even smiles when I come up with another idea or request. It’s a very good thing he’s pretty handy!

And, very occasionally, when he’s not busy measuring, fixing or carting things about the place, he gets to enjoy the spoils of what we’ve created - the best bit because that’s where memories like these are made. Sometimes you need to look back to see how far you’ve come.

On the last day of winter next far away next to the Southern Ocean on this vast Australian coastline, these words from revered English interior designer Nina Campbell OBE have struck a chord.

For this little cottage that was once nearly at the end of its days, is again being loved, not by just by our little family but from guests from all over the world. Guests who are happy to embrace her old bones, her character, her charming ways.

A tale of a hardworking pantry, a laundry and a stretch of coastline.

When we began designing Port Farm, we knew the land and the sea stretching out before our ‘one day’ house on the hill would inspire what happened inside.

As with the rest of the house, the pantry and laundry were designed around the colours, textures and ruggedness of Port Campbell Bay and the Great Ocean Road — but also around the everyday. Making tea, clearing dishes, washing sheets and towels, and somewhere to shed sandy and muddy clothes.

And yet, these two rooms nearly didn’t make it past the drawing board. They were spaces we wanted, but when the budget got tight, they were also spaces we were prepared to lose.

It’s hard to now imagine Port Farm without them and we were particularly delighted to this week find them featured in the new Kitchens, Bathrooms & Laundry edition of @countrystylemag .

Initially, we were a little shy of using so much colour, but thankfully Amy from @mainehouseinteriors gave us the push we needed to stay true to our brief — to bring the colours and textures of the coast inside.

With special touches by @bellebrightproject and photographed by @gemmola, it’s a lovely reminder that sometimes the rooms you nearly leave out can become the ones you’re most glad you kept. 🌊

Birregurra, a little town on the edge of The Otways, has long been one of our favourite places to stop for a wander, a good meal and a look around.

Last weekend we finally got to walk through the door of the newly opened Otways Distillery and hand on heart, we can tell you Sally, who has been supplying our guests with gin and limoncello since we opened our doors, has created the most delightful space.

If we could drop in every weekend we would! 🌊
