Last week, Port KC’s 2026 Team Retreat took our staff to St. Louis for three days of collaboration, industry insights, and regional partnership building. The itinerary included a tour of the @paintlouisofficial riverfront murals, an in‑depth briefing and visit with the St. Louis County Port Authority, and a @bpvstl tour focused on mixed‑use development and downtown activation.

We also had the opportunity to meet with leaders advancing economic and infrastructure initiatives across the state, including Aimee Andres (IRPT), Jeff Mazur (@greaterstlinc), and Subash Alias (@missouripartnership). We returned to Kansas City with a renewed focus on innovation, regional connectivity, and the forward‑looking development efforts that will continue driving progress across Missouri.

September was a busy month for Port KC! From industry events to riverfront development milestones and collaborative visioning for the future of Kansas City, our team engaged in efforts that strengthened partnerships, advanced key initiatives, and showcased the momentum happening across the riverfront and the region.

This first stop: The Inland Rivers, Ports, & Terminals Annual Conference held in Kansas City where Port KC President & CEO Jon Stephens joined a panel on project delivery and our staff hosted a port tour.

Port KC Chief of Staff Jolene Mead spoke at the @iremkansascity Annual Meeting Luncheon, sharing updates on the future of Kansas City’s riverfront.

Director of Finance Joe Lohman spoke at the International Trade Council of Greater Kansas City’s Annual Meeting, where Port KC served as the presenting sponsor.

Our team took a tour of CORE II — the newest apartment building from @northpointdev at Berkley Riverfront, which began welcoming residents in September!

We welcomed @kansasstateuniversity landscape architecture students for a two-day visit focused on riverfront planning and environmental design. This collaboration with K-State Technical Assistance to Brownfields and @heartlandconservationalliance will help reimagine Riverfront Park.

OIPA ON THE ROAD | LEARNING FROM PORT KC

The OIPA team recently traveled to Kansas City for a firsthand look at how strategic investment, infrastructure, culture, housing, and economic development can come together to transform communities.
Our visit with Port KC took us across several catalytic projects, including the KC Riverfront and KC Current stadium area and surrounding mixed-use development, the Keystone Innovation District, development along the historic 18th & Vine corridor, streetscape improvements, and the innovative transformation of the Rock Island Bridge.
We also had an opportunity to visit the historic home of Sarah Rector in Kansas City’s original Jazz District…an important reminder that development should not only create what comes next, but also recognize and preserve the people, places, and stories that came before us.
Beyond the tours, our team engaged in meaningful conversations around Port KC’s operations, conduit bonding, housing incentives, public-private partnerships, and the tools that can help move transformational projects from vision to execution.
Joining OIPA staff was District 2 Omaha City Councilwoman LaVonya Goodwin, who participated as both a City representative and member of OIPA’s Community Advisory Committee. Her participation helped strengthen the connection between our work, City priorities, and the communities we serve.
These trips are about more than seeing successful projects. They are about bringing ideas home, understanding what can be adapted for North Omaha, and continuing to build the relationships and knowledge necessary to turn opportunity into investment.
