So many parents assume Positive Discipline is the same as every other "positive" approach out there. Amber Traina, Jane Nelsen's granddaughter, names where the confusion comes from, and it has to do with two words we use as if they mean the same thing.

When you're trying to be kind with your kiddo, are you sometimes just trying to keep things nice?

Positive Discipline has been the book so many of us reach for since 1981, and now there's a new edition. My guest Amber Traina, granddaughter of Dr. Jane Nelsen, worked alongside Jane on the revision and the new chapter on technology. We talk about why kind and firm sits at the heart of it and the difference between niceness and kindness. Amber shares the tech audit and why connection is what brings our teens to us when they mess up.

✨ Kindness and niceness are two different things
✨ Kind and firm now headlines the new subtitle
✨ Let your kiddo be disappointed for their wellbeing
✨ Kids grow from the experiences we allow
✨ Repair means owning it and naming what's next
✨ A pocket note can reprogram inherited phrases
✨ Start with a tech audit of yourself
✨ Ask what function the screen serves your kiddo
✨ Agreements up front prevent conflict down the road
✨ Connection makes you the safe place after mistakes

Episode 676 just dropped! Search "joyful courage eps 676" wherever you listen, or find it at besproutable.com/podcasts.

Dogs must be attracted to great parenting advice- because my dog chewed up my new copy of the 2nd edition @positivediscipline book!

Yes- I left it on the couch! 😭😭😭

And Yes, this behavior was actually covered in Chapter 4: “A new look at “misbehavior”. 🤪

But hey- I guess I’m just getting a lesson in the Positive Discipline idea that “mistakes are wonderful opportunities to learn”.

But I won’t.

It’s truly my obsession. Not because I’m trying to be the perfect parent… Like that could ever exist! 🤣🤪 but I just love constantly learning new tools and phrases to help kids feel inspired to be the best version of themselves,

and also I love learning ways that help parents feel less exhausted, overwhelmed, and let’s face it… Inadequate. 😮‍💨

😎I love to help people feel equipped and empowered at this job that is both so challenging, and also the most fun and rewarding when we have the right toolbox.

And let’s be honest, I’m still learning every day for my own life and family too. ❤️🫶🏼

Your child just made the same mistake. Again. What you do next matters more than you think. 💛

Most of us believe kids learn when they feel bad about what they did. But blame doesn't teach — it discourages. There's a difference between a child who thinks "I made a mistake, and I can learn from it" and one who thinks "I am the mistake."

In her latest article, Jane Nelsen shares one simple question to ask yourself before you respond — one that could change the conversation, and maybe your child's life.

Here are three Positive Discipline ideas that can make a remarkable difference:

Model the habits you hope to see.

Children notice far more than they listen. If we expect them to put their phones away during family time while we’re checking notifications every few minutes, our actions speak louder than our words.

Create agreements instead of constant battles.

Children are much more likely to cooperate when they help create clear expectations. A family conversation about technology is often more effective than another lecture about technology.

Have faith in your child’s capability.

When screens are turned off, children may complain, become bored, or feel frustrated. Those moments aren’t failures—they’re opportunities. When we resist the urge to rescue or entertain them immediately, children begin discovering creativity, resilience, and confidence that no screen can provide.

Technology will continue to change.

The needs of children never will.

They still need connection, encouragement, belonging, meaningful contribution, and opportunities to solve real problems.

Those are the qualities that help children thrive—not only online, but throughout life.

The completely revised Second Edition of Positive Discipline includes an all-new chapter on navigating technology, social media, and screen time with kindness, firmness, and respect—without constant conflict.

Pre-order your copy today and discover practical tools for raising capable, confident children in a digital world.

Summer is a wonderful time for families. The pace often slows down, schedules become more flexible, and there are opportunities for more connection and fun.

At the same time, summer can bring its own challenges. Without the structure of school, children may become bored, spend excessive time on screens, argue more with siblings, or push limits in ways that leave parents feeling frustrated.

The good news is that you don't need a completely different parenting strategy for summer. Positive Discipline offers practical tools that can help families create a summer filled with connection, cooperation, and enjoyment.
