Last night we celebrated!

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate our community and unveil the U=U quilt!

After two years and thousands of hours of stitching, collecting photos, and hard work and joy, the quilt stands as a testament and visual reminder of the power and strength our communities hold when we are joined together - by common threads - collectively celebrating the message of U=U.

From afar, the U=U message is clear; however, this gives way to each individual voice as you approach.

The quilt is intended to be unfinished, growing and evolving with each new stitch added. We’re not done yet!

Watch this space for upcoming stitching parties and displays.

What is the U=U Community Quilt?

Positive East collected thousands of photographs submitted from around the world—from London to Sydney, Gaborone to Sacramento—to celebrate the U=U message. These images come from people living proudly with an undetectable viral load, as well as allies who support and champion U=U.

The photographs are printed on fabric and arranged to form the powerful statement: U=U.

The project draws upon a visual medium and language that has deep roots within the HIV Community - quilting. Across nine community stitching sessions, 174 contributors dedicated more than 1,500 hours of stitching to transform 4,000 photographs into three expansive 6’ × 6’ quilt panels.

Each individual stitch reflects the diversity and resilience of our global community. Each individual image amplifies this message thousands of times, creating a collective statement that fully reveals itself only when every individual contribution is viewed together. A single blue square represents all those who are no longer with us.

The U=U Community Quilt has been crafted with the same love and care as the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt. It allows us to re-imagine the AIDS Quilt in the historic era of U=U, while contributing to a growing and diverse archive of visual and artistic responses to HIV. by @positiveeast

AIDS Quilt UK have recorded testimonials telling the story behind the AIDS UK Memorial Quilt panels. One of the testimonials is by Alistair Hume and The Palmer family remembering Gary Palmer:

'I met Gary in London 1989 and I didn't know he was HIV positive at this time, he was one of the best looking men I'd ever seen, he was young, attractive, vibrant and totally unaware of the effect he had on other people, over three years I got to know him pretty well. He was for a while one of the youngest people I had known that succumbed to AIDS... Gary's picture plus the flowers and the sentiment are very important to me and help me continue in my own fight with AIDS. Dear Gary, I love and miss you...'

This is panel 7 of 42

You can listen to the full testimonial about this panel and others on @aidsquiltuk youtube channel.

The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt is an integral part of social history, remembering a generation of loved ones lost during the epidemic in the 80s and 90s. Each individual panel commemorates someone who died of AIDS and has been lovingly made by their friends, lovers or family. The panels are archived here at Positive East. by @positiveeast

Meet our next RED RUN spotlight Phil!

We're sharing why our Positive East walkers and runners love taking part in the RED RUN and what it means to them.

Why do you walk/run in the RED RUN?

I run the RED RUN as I believe it is a great opportunity for me to give something back. HIV care, prevention and support is something that is close to my heart. As a queer person, I feel it is important that the community do not forget about the past as we look towards the future.

What is a personal highlight from the RED RUN?

The biggest highlight of the RED RUN for me is the community spirit. Even in freezing rain and gale force winds, it's really hard not to feel joy at the number of others running or walking beside you and the others who brave the elements to come and cheer everyone on.

Why does supporting Positive East matter to you?

As Positive East organises the RED RUN, I think it is really important that they are supported to help keep this great community run going but also to continue the great work that they do in supporting people. If I can be a part of keeping that going, why not?

Want to join Phil and hundreds of others in support of Positive East at this year's RED RUN on November 21st? Sign up here!! - redrun.org.uk by @positiveeast

We provided 1,583 hours of one-to-one counselling to people living with HIV last year.

People living with HIV face a 95% higher risk of depression and a 38% higher risk of anxiety. At Positive East, we offer counselling that meets people where they are - considering mental health through the lens of living with HIV, not separate from it.

Stigma and isolation can turn into stress, depression, anxiety. This service supports people to reframe negative thoughts and beliefs to be healthier, happier, and feel like they have greater control over their lives.

One-to-one counselling is completely free and available long-term. Sessions can be offered in-person or online.
