World Tourism Day is a reminder that tourism is about so much more than getting from one place to another and ticking the boxes. It connects people and cultures, creates opportunities for communities and can help us better understand and appreciate the places we visit.

For me, that’s the real magic of travel - discovering the stories, traditions, food and people that make somewhere unique, while remembering that we have a responsibility to leave a positive footprint.

Last days in Helsinki and of course there was still plenty to do. I made the most of my last hours, wandering the quiet streets, finding food at the old market (the porridge is 10/10), and soaking up the last of the Finnish vibe. Then it was time to load up the bags and take the train to the airport.
Helsinki, thanks for the memories. I’ll really hope to be back someday 💙 by @possandruby

Our first day exploring Helsinki and we stumbled upon art, monuments, a dream library, incredible food and drinks, trams (that remind me of Melbourne ❤️) and a outdoor sauna! The rain didn’t dampen my spirits and 22,000 steps later I had a good grasp on the city and where I would explore more the following day 👣 by @possandruby

When in Finland one must sauna right??? This sauna experience @loylyhelsinki was fantastic. Three saunas on the deck ideally positioned right on the edge of the Baltic Sea for a cold plunge to remember 🥶
There are plenty of seat on the deck to enjoy in fine weather between saunas and shower and locker facilities. The onsite great bar and restaurant has floor to ceiling windows to enjoy the view pre or post sauna experience 🥵 taken in Helsinki by @possandruby

Let’s have a moment for lunch on the ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki - this was the most incredible shrimp sandwich ever 🥰 and the supporting act of a local beer and a cardamom bun made the 2hr cruise a fabulous culinary part of the adventure ⛴️ taken in Tallinn, Estonia by @possandruby

St Olaf’s Church in Tallinn now stands 123m tall after attracting a few lighting strikes over the years and incidentally was reduced in height. A beautiful simple church first recorded in 1267. It started as a Roman Catholic church and became Lutheran after the Reformation reached Tallinn in 1524, today it is a free church of many religions. And you guessed it we climbed the 258 steps to the top - spectacular views 😍 taken in St. Olaf's Church, Tallinn by @possandruby

What a fun walking tour in Tallinn, Estonia 🏰
The guide, George, stepped into medieval character and told us fascinating stories of how the town came to be. He even grabbed participants from the group to help tell the stories. And can you believe that this was a free tour?? Of course at the end you are welcome to offer a tip but it is not expected. My first mission in Tallinn, Estonia, was to eat dumplings!!

I had to try pelmeni - these delicious little parcels of dough filled with meat, traditionally served with sour cream, dill, butter or a simple sauce.

Their story stretches back through the food traditions of northern Eurasia, with roots often associated with Siberian and Ural regions and strong influences from Russian cuisine. Over time, pelmeni became a much-loved comfort food right across the region and Estonia is no exception.

And after a day of travelling on planes and trains and plenty of walking, a bowl of warm dumplings was exactly the fuel I needed!
