As you can tell by the vid in the last slide, this piece was a challenging one. Its speaks a bit on what it means to be an empath amidst the chaos and absurdity of this world we are living in. The title itself sums it up as well:
empath:
a person with a heightened, often profound capacity to sense, feel, and internalize the emotions, physical sensations, and energy of others as if they were their own.
impasse:
a situation, typically in negotiations or progress, where no further action is possible because the parties involved cannot reach an agreement.

2 weeks left! Big thank you to Kelly Jean Egan with @roborantreview for this write up on my most recent explorations with light, abstraction, and the odd nature of the human condition. If you have not yet had a chance to make it over to @canadacollegerwc, Kelly's thoughtful prose should be the gust of wind that nudges you towards the exhibition curated by @emilio_villalba.

Review: “McNeal’s paintings don’t fight the light. They sit in it. Even when the colors are bold, there’s a softness underneath that slows you down. The spacing helps too, nothing is crowded, each piece has room. Together they start to feel connected. You’re not really moving from one painting to the next. It feels more like drifting through them, like something just slightly off from reality.”

Cañada College Art Gallery is pleased to present Strange / Familiar, a solo exhibition by Oakland-based painter Wardell McNeal.

McNeal creates layered figurative works set against abstract landscapes, where color and form blur the boundaries between figure and ground. His paintings are built up through layers of acrylic on canvas, creating a visual push and pull between figure and environment that is both immediate and immersive.
