Can you afford to press your album on vinyl?

This is a very basic rule-of-thumb guide of the prices you can expect to pay, and how many you need to sell to make that back

it's also a simple explanation of where those costs go, and the basics behind pressing vinyl

In addition to releasing music as Posthuman / DJing / running I Love Acid, I work for a small independent vinyl pressing plant and my day job is advising people on how to press records.

HELLO

..this was meant to be a *brief* history of I❤️ACID - the clubnight & record label I run with Luke Vibert.

however i'm not very good at instagram so this video is EIGHT MINUTES LONG and let's be fair, nobody on this short-attention-span-doomscroll app is gonna watch me talk for that long...

but here it is anyway

Fascinating article on The Guardian about an illegal bootleg vinyl operation.

He specialised in bootlegs of pop music - fakes albums from Kanye West, De La Soul, Frank Ocean etc are amongst his stock. Mostly sold on ebay, discogs, and direct to record shops.

Looks like he had several presses and possibly a galvanics (plating stampers) operation too, but no lathe or printing was on site - which means somebody out there was printing his labels & sleeves, and cutting his lacquers 🤨

I first learnt about just how big some bootleg operations are when working for SRD back in 2001, and then again later when I worked for B12 Records, loads of their early 90s releases were copied in around 2002. You could tell the b12 fakes from the lack of elaborate hand-carved inscriptions in the runout grooves. There was a well known record shop that we suspected were behind them 👀

One of our favourite albums of last year was "Upping the Ante" by Mr. Vast. We go a long way back, Mr. Vast was part of Wevie Stonder who were labelmates of us on Skam Records back in the early 2000s and they played at one of our abandoned tube station parties back in 2001

Not long to go until the Continental Picnic lands at @brixtonradiolive 🥳

We'll be taking over Brixton Radio for the day on Saturday August 29th, with a big sound system outside in the yard from 1pm - 7pm, then moving inside until 2am. Funk, house, techno vibes 🪐✨️✌️

We're super excited that Spage will be joining us for a two hour set in the yard, with @posthumanmusic (I Love Acid) bringing the acid and bleeps to the evening session, alongside the Peasants' Picnic, @continental_breakfast__ Brixton Radio crews, including @rayrhem, @dj_friday, @mrbenagency @midnight.manoeuvres

There'll be food available during the day and covered outside lounge areas - day festival kinda vibe
