It’s humbling to realize that this structure is a more powerful embodiment of what I sought to convey as an artist than anything I produced over the course of my career. It’s even more humbling to realize that that goal, what I thought of as the pinnacle of my life, was actually just a representation of the foundation of what was to come. It’s almost as if my desire was to distill a vision of the future without context or understanding. Are we just dreaming of a future that's all but inevitable? If so, why rush it? Especially when it’s more than likely that we’re rushing in the wrong direction. Critical success came as delayed gratification, bestowed on me only after I no longer really cared. I remember all those years of caring too much - about recognition, about a certain definition of success, which is one of the things that made it so elusive. It definitely affected the quality of my work. I thought I was fearless but I was playing it safe, worried about how my art as an extension of myself would be received. It’s all easy to recognize in retrospect, now that I’m on to identifying with other things;p Still, the questions stand: Why do you do what you do? What and who are you doing it for? Is this the mission or just a premonition of the real work that’s to come... by @postmichael

The most significant artwork I've ever made isn't the one that was acquired by the Pompidou; it wasn't capitalism in its death throes in the middle of times square; it was a tree of fire that only existed for a day before we offered it up in effigy and only a moment before it was totally subsumed by flames. It was a collaboration with the great @jacoboftroy and our process of working together mirrored the opposing spirals that came together in love and reconciliation to create something greater than either of us could've done alone. It was assembled from the pieces of hundreds, perhaps thousands of trees that I'd salvaged over the last twenty years, some of which were already on their way to becoming art. I thought I could save them from oblivion but turns out that's not the point. The point is to align ourselves with the continuum of life and to let go of all that holds us back, including all the material and conceptual things that we somehow thought would save us. The transformative power of community, catharsis and this event in particular cannot be put into words. You'll just have to experience it for yourself;* by @postmichael

I want to be very clear that I am not advocating this position. I'm part jewish and I owe my country everything but cannot deny that there are many people who have legitimate reasons not to feel that way. I'm not going to enumerate the sins of the past and am so grateful that those we've wronged haven't either. I've been received with open arms in countries that we've attacked without pretext, propped up murderous regimes, overthrown democratically elected ones, the list goes on and on. There are also plenty of people within this country with legitimate grievances and the fact that they can express those grievances, even in ways as extreme as this, is one of the things that makes this country great. It is a powerful symbol of protest in a country that doesn't see nearly enough of it and it is an invitation to consider the ways that we can right the wrongs of the past and the present. I love you all. I love that we exist. I love that our countries exist. I hope that we can be faithful stewards of the power and the privilege that we inherited at birth, to help heal the wounds that got us here. I hope that we can find a way to love and forgive those who have wronged us and those we have wronged. taken in Brooklyn, New York by @postmichael
