#PRDTOP10 ALBUMS OF 2023 - #1: Love in the Void by Hammock
After 11 studio albums, we’ve heard a lot of diversity from the ambient post-rock duo from Nashville that have become favorites in the post genre. From ambient based albums like the recent Elsewhere to more full band classics like Departure Songs, the band has given us a lot. But with this 12th studio album, it seems like the perfect culmination of almost 20 years of music from the band. Love in the Void is sweet, it’s sorrowful, it’s gripping, it’s powerful and features their classic sound but with a stronger presence of drums and soaring guitars that create higher climatic highs than the band has had in a long time adding to the emotion of the album. The band said that this album “looks to the future, seizes the present, and unabashedly relishes the experiences and bonds that bring meaning to our day” and this album showcases those things perfectly. This album came out early this year and has been the soundtrack of 2023 to a lot of us that have loved the album and it will definitely stand the test of time and be a new favorite album from the band to many. A truly special release that takes the spot as our top album of the year. Favorite song is “Love in the Void”

#PRDTOP10 ALBUMS OF 2023 - #2: End by Explosions in the Sky
The iconic post-rock band from Austin, TX gave us a scare when they first announced this album and tour thinking it may be the end of the band but thankfully their eighth studio album and newest in seven years isn’t their end. The band said this album’s starting point was “the concept of an ending—death, or the end of a friendship or relationship” making it relatable to us all and adding more deep meaning behind the seven songs on the album. Musically it’s what we all love from EITS and still ebbs and flows like we’d want it to but with great production and some full, extra layers added into their core sound. With the end in mind, whatever ending you have pictured, it adds a deeper feeling of sorrow, freedom, and renewal as you listen to this album and is the perfect soundtrack for that ending. Favorite song is “The Fight”

#PRDTOP10 ALBUMS OF 2023 - #3: A Language Unspoken by Vaudlow
The Nashville based post-rock duo describe themselves as “cinematic music therapy” in their bio and this new full length album is just that. One of the best produced albums in the genre of the year that is tight, crisp, full sounding, and lets their music shine through with lots of gentle, ambient lows and massive, thick sounding highs with lots of layers. So many beautiful melodies and tender moments swelling into heavier cinematic climaxes that make you feel like you’re standing on a mountaintop in victory. No sophomore slump for these guys but another incredible album to add to their young discography. Favorite song is “In Loving Memory”

#PRDTOP10 ALBUMS OF 2023 - #4: Brefjære by Spurv
Dark, gloomy, moody, haunting are just some of the many words used to describe the Norwegian post-rock band’s sound they’ve established and this new album, first one since Myra in 2018, perfectly encapsulates everything about the band while showing their growth. With strings and choir elements thrown in with driving and climatic guitars and drums it creates a gorgeous cohesive sound as cold as the winter but also still uplifting and tender at moments as well. The dynamic and mood diversity on this album makes it stand out and gives the listener quite a journey start to finish. Definitely the bands best work yet. Favorite song is “Til en ny vår”

#PRDTOP10 ALBUMS OF 2023 - #5: ÁTTA by Sigur Rós
The legendary Icelandic post-rock band returned with their eighth studio album this year and first since Kveikur a decade ago. It also features the return of their original keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson to the band as well. This album is a dreamscape and filled with haunting strings and an overall ambient atmosphere at the core of the album. Jónsi sounds as good as ever and said that the goal for ÁTTA was “to have minimal drums and for the music to be really sparse, floaty and beautiful” and that is exactly how this album sounds. Definitely not as big or buildy as typical Sigur Rós would sound but this album is a breath of fresh air from the band that adds another color to the palette of their discography. Favorite song is “Gold”

#PRDTOP10 ALBUMS OF 2023 - #6: The One Above by hubris.
It’s been a long three years since the Swiss post-rock band’s acclaimed album Metempsychosis came out and this year we finally got a new album from them. With only four songs but a length of 45 minutes it’s filled with drama, emotional expression, and a full perfectly produced sound that continues to grow after each build and section. Every song is close to or over the ten minute mark in length and as much as the songs progress, build, mellow out, and evolve it doesn’t feel that long and keeps you locked in the whole listen. These guys continue to raise the bar not only for themselves but the genre and this album really is The One Above for them as a band as they continue to evolve. Be sure to give it a listen if you haven’t! Favorite song is “Beneath Othrys”

#PRDTOP10 ALBUMS OF 2023 - #7: 33 by Ranges
It’s extremely rare to have an album that comes out this late in the year to make the list. This album just came out December 12th and was immediately impressionable. The post-rock band from Bozeman, Montana continue to grow their sound which is full of incredible climatic builds, well placed electronic elements, catchy leads and melodies, and an overall massive sound. These guys continue to create an atmosphere that’s all their own and each song has its own world and vibe you can stay in. This is a fresh and amazing album so be sure to go check it out! Favorite song is “VII. Nigredo Melancholia: A Black Blacker than Black”

#PRDTOP10 ALBUMS OF 2023 - #8: Egress by The Color of Cyan
The Puerto Rico/Chicago based post-rock band released their sophomore album this year and it’s a beautiful one. The band says about the album that its sound “blurs the boundaries of their post, metal, and Neo-classical labels by exploring introspective emotions through delicate layering” and that Egress “is about time, time for knowledge, for love, for pain and for the constant learning that makes us who we are”. It really does have an older post-rock sound to it (that fans of Mono would appreciate) but The Color of Cyan still have their own flavor and flare with their cinematic guitars and strings. This album is pretty and raw at the same time and the live strings plus full band with no added electronic production makes it have that nostalgic sound a lot of post-rock fans crave and miss. Favorite song is “When Autumn”

#PRDTOP10 ALBUMS OF 2023 - #9: Being Human by Shipwreck Karpathos
The post-rock/instrumental punk band from Indianapolis, IN are back and have released their follow up and sequel to their debut album Bring Down the Sky this year and it’s quite a journey. The band said this album, their main characters in the story “begin their search for a new home in a dying world, wholly unaware of the doom that now stalks them, or the long-forgotten history that connects them all” and musically it features a massive sound filled with lots of tappy guitars, driving drums, strings and other orchestral elements, and just straight up ripping punk influenced highs. Being able to hear some of this album live was quite a treat this year as well and really puts into perspective the amount of layers this band has with six members on stage making massive yet dynamic music as one. A lot of years and hard work was put into this album and it definitely paid off and continues the story before it. Definitely check this one out if you haven’t. Favorite song is “SCENE XI: Life as War”

#PRDTOP10 ALBUMS OF 2023 - #10: The Night is for Dreamers by Din of Celestial Birds
This album may have flown under the radar for many but it’s one that is very worthy of being showcased. The post-rock band from Leeds, UK created a great piece of work with this album featuring eight songs with some heaviness, soaring leads, and lots of twists and turns. The musicianship and songwriting on this album is top shelf and the production sounds tight and crisp as well. This album is a perfect example of the modern post-rock sound and made a solid, memorable album from this year. If you haven’t checked this one out be sure to give some time to listen to it all the way through; it’s deserving of your time and being on this list. Favorite song is “Laureate of American Lowlife”
