my first kiss was in the mary garden at the st. gertrude festival, the summer after 7th grade

he told me that he really had to focus on his 8th grade football season & didn’t have time for a girlfriend. but AFTER football season…we had a real shot.

football season ended, I followed up. turned out, he didn’t mean it. he didn’t want to date after football season…he didn’t want to date at all.

after singing, crying, pay-per-text on my Nokia brick & prank calling, I got through my first heartbreak

I have been falling for, fantasizing, & fawning over men since I watched Prince Philip sweep Aurora off her (unconscious) feet.

I think we all have a through line in our lives.

A type of adversity that shapes us, & is a catalyst for growth when we allow it to be

For some people it’s loss & grief. For others it’s their health — mental, physical, emotional. Maybe poverty. Perhaps family.

For me, it’s men.

I don’t remember making that choice before I came to earth, but it’s the card I drew.

Look…it could be a lot worse. I’m not complaining…just, recognizing.

When I was 13 years old, heart — breaking, I knew there was a reason. I knew I was learning & I felt it in my soul that one day I would see that it wasn’t all for nothing.

Dozens of heartbreaks, a handful of palette cleansing one night stands, the hopeful “what ifs,” one round of chlamydia, & 18 years later — I bring you
✨ The Men of My 20s ✨

Although it’s true, every heartbreak put another protective wall around me that needs to be dismantled brick by brick

What’s also true…is I’ve grown exponentially, I’ve learned about myself, my wounds, my flaws, my heart

My self-respect is at an all-time high…I’ve been celibate for 18 months…I know my value, I know my worth

And my proudest accomplishment has to be remaining a lover girl. Remaining the optimistic, hopeful, loving, romantic woman that I’m meant to be.

There may be walls around me, but they’re protecting a soft gooey center.

This show is here to stay & I’m so excited for its debut at #EdFringe

I know it’s not all it’s cracked up to be but also think it’s interesting to examine why I feel the need for outside stimulation in a high activity environment — because I do, I absolutely do feel like I want to partake but none of these options make sense. Benny it is.

A few months ago I watched this video journal for the first time in six years and I had the weirdest reaction.

There were clearly tears falling from my eyes as I was watching it, but I kept saying to myself “why are my eyes watering, why do my eyes keep watering”

I’m pretty comfortable crying, but watching this video back, I couldn’t admit to myself that it was getting to me — it was so weird. I wasn’t letting myself fully immerse into those emotions again.

And a lot of that time in my life, the time of self loathing & anger, I don’t remember until I hear it from my own mouth or see it in my own words.

I do know that there was nothing worse than feeling stuck. And feeling out of control. And looking in the mirror and feeling angry. Knowing I was better than what I was seeing. Knowing I was capable of more.

And feeling like one step forward wasn’t enough, so I kept myself standing still.

I kept myself in a loop and day after day I buried myself in frustration & overwhelm & loathing & sadness.

I think I felt like I was standing in cement but I also knew that I was the one pouring it.

Three years after I recorded this video, I packed up my life & bought a one way ticket to Australia.

I needed to go. I needed to unplug. I needed to retreat in order to expand. I needed to change my environment. I needed to get real with myself about what I wanted and what direction I was going. I needed clarity.

I don’t have a clean answer for how I went from that video journal to doing n-ked comedy in Scotland.

I’ll deep dive in a future “Stories I Wouldn’t Tell My Nana” (podcast) episode.

For now…I can tell you…I just started. I did the next right thing for me. I made the next right choice, in that moment. Brick by brick. One foot in front of the other. Rewiring one neural pathway at a time.

And it hasn’t been linear. It’s still not linear. It’ll never be linear.

And brick by brick. One next right thing at a time, that same woman who f—king hated who she saw in the mirror, now looks at herself with kindness, love, & admiration, and sees strength, resilience, beauty, & power.

And that’s what a n-ked comedy show means to me by @potatowithmakeup

I f—ing love that @thegoddesssathena welcomed him into our show.

There’s been something really special about attracting a wide demographic of people — we’ve had everyone from a woman descended from Chinese royalty to Scottish uni students looking for free late night entertainment

To connect with an audience filled with people across the spectrums of ethnicity, gender, sexuality, physical ability, financial status, age…is one of my proudest markers of success, and I can only hope that continues
