What happens when a large group of clay lovers gather around one wheel? 🤎

My coil-and-throw demonstration with the #Throwmaster by #BelaKotai at @exconvento_grottaglie was a truly special evening. As a Western Australian in Grottaglie, Puglia—a place with such a rich and vibrant ceramic tradition—it felt incredibly special to share my way of working with this wonderful community.

Around 25–30 potters and clay enthusiasts joined us, and soon the demonstration became a wonderful exchange between the audience and I. Some brave ones came up to the wheel, had a go themselves, others asked questions and all listened intently to my explanations and experiences. Francesco translated between us, helping the conversation flow across languages through our shared love of clay.

The vessel that emerged was a little like its maker—slightly wobbly in the belly, but full of purpose, character and joy. 😊

The Antico Convento dei Cappuccini, a beautiful 16th-century monastery on the edge of Grottaglie’s historic centre, has been transformed into a vibrant, not-for-profit cultural hub where local and international creatives come together to share ideas, skills and knowledge.

An inspiring place to make, connect and collaborate. 🤎 #menafueco

What started as a throwing demonstration became so much more than simply watching someone work with clay.

The invitation was to get involved, ask questions, exchange ideas and experience the process firsthand.

There’s a big difference between watching someone throw a pot and actually sitting at the wheel yourself!

Getting hands-on gave everyone a new appreciation of the coordination, control and sensitivity that working with clay demands.

One of the most exciting parts of throwing is not knowing exactly where the process will take you.

Rather than forcing a predetermined outcome, I love responding to the clay, following its movement and allowing the form to develop organically.

Discovery is part of the making.

From experienced potters to intermediate makers and people who had never touched clay, everyone brought something different to the wheel.

No experience necessary — just curiosity, a willingness to try and a little patience!

Watching that transformation together — and understanding the choices behind it — was every bit as valuable as the finished piece itself.

A huge ‘Grazie Mille’ to everyone who participated, and especially to Francesco for interpreting, guiding the conversation and helping make it such a memorable experience.

It was such a precious reminder that making together is one of the best ways to learn, connect and see the world through someone else’s eyes.

If you’ve been looking for my work during @margaretriverregionopenstudios, you’ll still find a beautiful collection waiting for you there — including plenty of my handmade noodle bowls, serving pieces and everyday pottery 🙌🏻

While the Open Studios are on, I’m taking a little creative recharge in Italy exploring centuries-old churches, soaking up inspiration, and enjoying a slower pace for a couple of months.
