Starbuck has been having a rough time lately with doctors not being able to figure out the cause of the bump on her nose.

This issue started back in the spring and has been slowly growing and all other attempts (anti-viral, anti-biotic etc) have not been conclusive. She’s currently on pain killers.

The next step would be a CT scan but man Canada’s vet industry is quite exploitative. The costs are currently financially prohibitive for me, but if anyone has had/come across similar experience or would be able to donate for her scan, it would be greatly appreciated. (Scan is about ~$5k)

There’s also a potential laser treatment out of Guelph but that would be in the $20k range 😣

Probably one of the absolute best animated films I’ve seen if we’re talking about visual aesthetic and creative use of 3D with some extremely effective uses of 2D animation.

I was planning to watch Resident Evil for a second time (great film, terrible goofy ending) but last minute something drew me to choose this and I’m pretty happy with that choice.

The actual plot of this is pretty good too; a tale of friendship around some interesting folklore I knew nothing about with enjoyable performances and fun characters. A very lively world with an effective emotional core. It’s from the team that brought the recent Puss-in-Boots and The Croods films, both of which I recall also enjoying.

But the standout here for me is easily the style. Remember how Into the Spider-Verse was able to captivate us with its innovating filmmaking? Mixing genres, frame rates, dimensions. Pretty much the same level of technical prowess and creativity on display here.

While I greatly dislike films that are converted to 3D in post (when shot single lens, like Brand New Day), animated films like this don’t have that limitation and thus the actual 3D is a nice treat to see on a big screen like this. No dimness in brightness to critique, or weird edges where the post-conversion wasn’t quite on point. And the filmmakers here clearly understand the pros and cons of shoving images ā€œoutā€ right to our faces.

I can’t recall the last film that had me enjoying the constant creative choices as to how to split not just foreground and background, but every depth in between. There’s a couple sequences that are ā€œ2Dā€ but even then it has full volumetric depth and simply put; it was freaking cool.

Highly recommend checking this out in 3D at your local cinema.

Damn good movie. A lot of fun, top-notch action, extremely impressive sets (and their destruction), surprisingly funny, quite gory, and wildly inconsistent VFX—ranging from PS3-era to modern day.

Even though I had seen the trailer, I’d forgotten a lot of the details in it, and I kind of wish I knew even less going in. The movie does a very good job of hooking you and holding your interest for basically the entirety of its 2½-hour runtime.

I had a few minor issues, mostly having to do with the consistency of the characters and the monster (particularly its distance from people between shots) but the cinematography and editing are so kinetic that the film remains extremely enjoyable to watch. The music was pretty good too.

As for the characters, well… they don’t really have that much depth to them. The film gives you broad-strokes characterizations, with basically everyone being a jerk—which works very well for this plot. Half the script is mostly just swearing and loud exclamations. It’s skin-deep, but again, that’s what the movie sets out to do, and it accomplishes that goal.

The surprising standout is the humour, with a lot of funny situations breaking up the frantic action in ways that actually feel relevant and add to the world and the weird little town the film has built.

Also, this is what I would call a #RedFruit film. šŸŽ IYKYK

It’s good stuff. Check it out.

At the end of No Way Home, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was setup to be closer to the broke, overwhelmed, still-very-much-a-secret-identity of the character we all used to know before the MCU. Now with this follow up, we are pleasantly treated to a smaller, more self-contained Spidey story that has a lot going for it.

I’m quite impressed with the marketing keeping the villain under wraps and enjoyed the mystery of following along until the reveal. It’s handled quite well and given the ridiculously high box office, I think most people are in agreement.

There’s obviously still some MCU crossover and cameos but luckily this avoids the typical setups for another film (couple Easter eggs do that instead) which is the right choice considering this film is already lengthy on its own, clocking in at 2.5 hours.

I ended up watching it in 3D due to the showtime I could catch and thus feel like I missed out a bit on the cinematography as the glasses still make everything a bit darker and the aspect I saw it in was 1.85 ā€œimax-formattedā€ rather than the 2.35:1 it was ideally shot for. Don’t watch this in 3D.

It’s already making all the money in the world but rightfully so. Definitely worth a rewatch.

So another Toy Story but this one is very much Jessie’s story. The Buzz Lightyears get a side plot, and Woody is sorta…there. A little.

But the bulk of the story centers around Jessie and her kid getting an iPad to fit in with other kids. Similar plot yes, but updated for this digital generation and what I thought would be a fairly simple story about tech replacing toys … is actually much more.

The tablet, called a LilyPad, is the plot device used to tell a story about connection, friendships, and fitting in. I was invested quite a bit with Bonnie’s attempts to make friends, when clearly she wasn’t ready to ditch her imagination and join a faux social network through the LilyPad.

The music was quite good throughout, scored by Randy Newman but this time he has no track with singing. I wonder why, but it didn’t hurt the film. The DNA is still very much Pixar and this was a worthy outing.

Also; the 3D was worth it.

The first half of the movie is really good - super good even. The right amount of cool scifi; planets, ships, aliens, and a flawed protagonist with a tragic back story. There’s also a dog.

The second half of the film is where it loses me a bit, and it has to do with the same issue that always plagues Superman stories: kryptonite. Though in this case, it’s just a green star? Huh?

I appreciate that the film didn’t need to end with a doomsday device or a horde of faceless enemies or a sky beam. The story is localized to Kara’s journey though in many ways she’s not the only protagonist. There’s a character Ruthye that’s basically on an Inigo Montoya quest to avenge her slain family and Kara gets mixed up in that.

Works pretty well without needing to resorting to Kryptonite drain as Ruthye doesn’t have superpowers…until of course the script can’t help itself I guess and we have Kara nerfed in a lame way.

The humor is good, though not quite as funny as James Gunn’s dialogue. The acting keeps us engaged with the performances, especially Jason Momoa as Lobo. He’s not really needed in this story, but here he is, and he’s clearly having fun back in the DC.

Oh, there’s a cameo from Seth Rogen and it sticks out too much. He shoulda done a voice or something, not just his regular speech.

Is it really the last film? Maybe, it’s in the title after all.

Is it the best? Well - in this context it really refers to ā€œbest ofā€ as about a third (at least) of the movie is clips and stunts from years past. A few of them I know I’ve seen on YouTube or elsewhere (like the Brad Pitt ā€œkidnappingā€).

That said - i still laughed quite a bit and if you’re a fan of Johnny Knoxville and gang, you’ll probably enjoy it too.

Not much to really say other than that. It’s more of the same. Literally. But with a couple new stunts. And yeah, the OGs are definitely showing their age but what else would you expect for a 25+ year old franchise?
