And finally, after 2.5 years, we get to release this purpose project online, and only, only because of the expedition crew that poured their hearts and souls into it since day dot.
.
Yesterday the main #fromkurilswithlove doco was released to the public (link in BIO). Over the coming weeks two shorter BTS stories will follow, each revealing more scenes from this special, unprotected place, in much need of protection for future generations.
.
But for now, switch on 4K, crank the volume for @lgnnelson original score, put the phone down for 25 minutes, and enjoy a trip through the incredible Kuril Islands.
.
Main nod goes to my two keystone collaborators on this project: director @taylorfreesolo and DoP/co-director @renan_ozturk. So much respect for these two.
.
But without the incredible goodwill, photographic eyes and storytelling mastery of @chrisburkard @jtkerby @tedhesser @_ryanhill_ @rishisugla @donreverendo it wouldn’t have been possible.
.
Not to mention our main subject and archipelagic guide @bigdaddivladi who’s passion for the Kurils and it’s “stink animals”, turbo-charged personality and infectious enthusiasm caught us all by surprise and sparked what will now hopefully become a powerful movement through his new non-profit Kuril Islands Research & Conservation Initiative (KIRCI)(to support KIRCI: www.fromkurilswithlove.com)

And none would have been possible without the early risk taking, ongoing support and passion of @e_kaspersky @alejandroarango13 @ollyru999 @tomorrow_unlocked @kasperskylab @djtasman @robjlangford81

And without ship operator Nik and Afina at @east_tour.ru we would have been boatless. Not strongly recommended in the Kurils.

First day of skiing and seeing the most intimidating crown face I’ve ever seen. At least 300m wide and 2-3m deep. Been contemplating some solo backcountry adventures this season but this has made me think twice taken in Gemsstock by @povel

It doesn’t look like much here, and we have much better drone footage from @tedhesser (check Teds Instagram for a sneak peak) @renan_ozturk @chrisburkard @_ryanhill_ and stills from @NatGeo photographer @jtkerby - but this whale is one of possibly only 40 living North Pacific Right Whales. The chances of us capturing footage of one in the middle of the Sea of Okhotsk, 120km and 14 hours from nearest land is astronomically small, and yet another example of how lucky we’ve been on this expedition. I’ve been told @nrdc_org has started a global initiative to try to save the remaining ones, so head over in their direction if you want to get behind it. For more stories #fromkurilswithlove

Just a little something while I sift the 500, mainly close up #iphonexs photos I took on Tyuleny Island yesterday. The tranquility and cuteness in this video is highly misleading. Approximately 40,000 adult Fur Seals and Steller Sea Lions reside on this tiny 120x500m island at any given time during summer, not counting the additional 140,000 that are out fishing, or the 40-50,000 pups. Including this one. Add to that about 400,000 Common Murrs (penguin looking bird), and throw is a bunch of Puffins, Seagulls and five of @bigdaddivladi dedicated PhD students and you got yourself one helluva party. The constant roaring cacophony of sounds, the smell from hell and the rawest views of life and death all mixed into one big scene has certainly put a new perspective on these types of scenes in the David Attenborough (eg: @ourplanet ) nature documentaries that I have known and loved, and which have shaped much of my previous life as a dedicated couch explorer. Growing up in Sweden where eagles used to be critically endangered, and still today are a rare and usually very distant sight, and with a dad that’s been obsessed by them his whole life; the experience of finding and seeing this guy up close cut straight to the core for some reason. Luckily eagles aren’t endangered in the Kurils, and this one most likely died of natural causes. Follow for more stories #fromkurilswithlove:

Camera phone being put to the test at the seal breeding grounds yesterday. Definitely a few obvious limitations, especially when being surrounded by pros with pro equipment, but still crazy to think that less than 10 years ago it was just a phone. #iPhoneXS. @bigdaddivladi agreed to a new Instagram name today, adding to the legend that is building around him in the group. The whole storytelling crew spent most of the morning shooting the exchange of the HD cams, placed at a cliffs edge overlooking a colony of a few hundred seals below. So many amazing drone and wide angle landscape shots from the rest of the #fromkurilswithlove crew today, literally capturing Ushishir Island from every possible angle. Chose to focus on the sulfuric outlets and the boiling volcanic hot springs near our campsite instead. Kinda liberating not to see a place like this blocked off by trails, warning signs and fences but a bit scary at the same time knowing the hollow sounding thin crust you stand on can cave in at any time. @renan_ozturk
