Tucked beneath the last of the mountain snow, this timeless farmhouse rests in Shirakawa-go

These traditional houses are called gasshō-zukuri (合掌造り), which literally means “constructed like hands in prayer.” The steep thatched roofs resemble hands pressed together in Buddhist prayer and are designed to shed heavy snow efficiently — essential for surviving the deep winters in mountainous regions like Shirakawa-go and Gokayama.

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Shirakawa-go and Gokayama were registered in 1995 for their well-preserved traditional farmhouses.
• Many of these houses are over 250 years old and still inhabited or used as guesthouses and museums.
• The design is entirely wooden, no nails, and the thatched roof is renewed every 20–30 years through community effort.
• They are a symbol of self-sufficient, rural Japan, blending architecture with nature’s rhythm.
