Cheapest flight vs best route: 4 nights in Breckenridge from BWI ✈️

Late January 2027 (Jan 27–31), 2 people, economy, priced Oct 4:

💸 Cheapest: $244 each round trip on Frontier, 1 stop in Atlanta both ways. Out Jan 27 at 12:38 PM, lands Denver 9:25 PM. Home Jan 31 at 7:13 PM, lands BWI 6:56 AM Feb 1. 20.5 hours of travel, 4 ski days.

🎯 Best route: $438 each on Southwest, nonstop both ways. Out at 7:00 AM, lands 9:10 AM, skiing by 12:25 PM on day one. Home at 5:10 PM, after a last morning on the mountain. 7.3 hours of travel, 5 ski days.

The difference: +$194 each, 13 fewer hours of travel, +1 day on the mountain.

How we pick: nonstop or 1 stop, nothing landing after midnight, and land early enough to ski the first afternoon or leave late enough to ski the last morning. With the same hotel, 3-day tickets and shuttle as our trip receipt, the trip is $1,476 vs $1,670 each.

This is just one. Our free newsletter has a bunch more like it every week, from your airport. Fares change daily.

Meet Shredrick 🏔️🤙

He's been chasing powder since before snowboards were cool. Now he keeps an eye on the snow, the flights and the prices, so you can find the right mountain for your dates and know when to book.

Follow along for snow reports, trip costs and the best time to go. 👇 Where are you skiing this winter?

How to layer for skiing: cold on the chairlift? It's probably your layers, not your jacket. 🥶

Shredrick's layering rule:
1️⃣ A thin base layer (wool or synthetic)
2️⃣ Something warm in the middle
3️⃣ A shell on top

And skip the cotton. Cotton holds sweat, and wet is cold.

Save this for your trip. 📌

Best ski resorts for beginners, ranked 🟢

The 59 resorts we track with a published terrain split, ranked by share of green terrain 50%, the drive from the airport 25% and acres 25%. Same math for all of them, no judgment calls this time.

S: Deer Valley (30% green terrain on 4,300 acres, 38 miles from SLC)
A: Sun Valley, Palisades Tahoe
B: Beaver Creek, Big Sky, Vail, Lake Louise
C: Whistler Blackcomb, Stratton, Sunday River, Mt. Bachelor, Snowbasin

Stratton has the biggest green share on the card (40%) but only 670 acres. Snowshoe missed the card by half a point. Green % is each resort's own trail rating.

How many Stowes fit inside Vail? 📐

About 11, by skiable acres: Vail has 5,317 acres, Stowe has 485.

Both outlines are drawn at the same scale. They're the resort boundaries mapped in OpenStreetMap, which include land nobody skis, so the count uses each resort's published skiable acres.

Acres from each resort's own site, checked in our Sept 2026 audit. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).

El Niño Watch, Part 4: El Niño and East Coast skiing, what it means for the East 🌊❄️

1️⃣ Leaned thinner (Northeast): 90% of normal snowfall or less in 4 of the last 6 strong El Niño winters. 2015-16 was about half of normal.
2️⃣ Not a law: the strong winters of 1957-58, 1965-66 and 1972-73 were near or above normal.
3️⃣ No pattern (West Virginia): the Snowshoe area saw 158% of normal in 2009-10, but 60% in 2023-24.
4️⃣ Low confidence: these are valley weather stations, not summit snow. A hint, not a forecast.
5️⃣ For your trip: book refundable and watch the forecast. History tilts the odds. No promises.

💬 Comment ELNINO and we'll DM you the full El Niño Watch guide: every region, the odds, and trips to match.

Next El Niño Watch: right after NOAA's Nov 12 update.

Based on the 6 strong El Niño winters since 1982-83, season snowfall vs normal. Source: NOAA station data via RCC-ACIS.
