The Quilotoa Loop - 4 days of beautiful hiking through some amazing scenery! Starting off in Sigchos for the finale of Lake Quilotoa on day 3.
Getting lost on this hike is definitely a thing, there are just so many paths to take but each one usually seems to take you the right way in the end. I wish I could say we got our well deserved view on day 3 but unfortunately the cloud rolled in and there was little to see. Sods law...
Thankfully the following morning it was clear and we decided to hike around the lake before leaving. Great 4 days spent in the hills with great company along the way!

Ecuador - Packed full of volcanoes and crater lakes, some of the scenery this country has to offer is incredible! Perfect for getting out and about. Some of the hikes from the North of Ecuador around Otavalo and Quito. From start to finish, Laguna Cuicocha with Volcan Cotacachi in the background, top of Fuya Fuya with Volcan Cotacachi, Imbabura and the snow capped Cayambe (left-right) in the distance and Laguna Mojanda below, Laguna Mojanda, the "Death Pass" route up Volcan Pichincha, name is a bit extreme but it was a fun scramble, which stands guard over Quito below.

So, after an amazing 6 and a half weeks travelling through Colombia (Sorry in advance, photo spam will come soon, I've put up none!) we arrived at the border into Ecuador last night.
It wasn't all smiles as in the photo. This crossing took us 6 hours to pass through, thanks to the one border official on duty at the Colombian end. Ridiculous!
Compared to the situation of some of the Venezuelans we met and talked to in the queue this was nothing though. Hearing and reading about the crisis in Venezuela is one thing but witnessing hundreds of men, woman and children standing in the freezing cold last night waiting to pass through in the hopes of a new start and better future away from their homes was quite heartbreaking. Despite having been forced to leave their home country there is an inspiring positivity among them all on what is to come and the hope that things will get better back in Venezuela, eventually... Something that sadly doesn't look to be in the near future.
It was a bittersweet final farewell to an amazing time in Colombia as we move on to Ecuador, reminding us how lucky we are to have these opportunities while others struggle daily.

5 days stuck on a roasting hot boat from Panama to Cartagena with this lot. I mean, it could have been worse... San Blas was incredible! Palm tree lined islands appear out of nowhere with their perfect white sand beaches and surrounding reefs ready to be explored. The bumpy, slight understatement, sailing through the open sea was worth it after getting to spend time here. True island paradise 🌴 Now to start the Colombian adventure!! .

Managed not to get lost (on the way up at least) and made it to the top of Central America's highest peak, Volcán Tajumulco, @4,220m by ourselves! Camped overnight at 4000m (SO COLD!) and completed the final leg in the morning for sunrise overlooking the rugged Guatemalan landscape below with steep jagged hills and volcanoes emerging through the cloud below. Made a new best pal, Chicita, who was waiting outside our tent in the morning and joined us for the summit and then almost entirely back down. I was slightly heartbroken when she decided to leave us 😭

Bit behind on the Guatemala updates, here's some from the last week or so moving down from Flores to Antigua, San Pedro la Laguna (Lake Atitlan) and Xela. While in San Pedro we completed our first volcano hike up Volcan San Pedro to 3020m. We definitely underestimated the challenge of this hike and almost passed out hauling ourselves up the relentlessly steep terrain! The view at the top was pretty fantastic though! We're spending a couple of days in Xela now, where we were met by crazy skies/lighting storms, before hiking the highest peak in Central America, Volcan Tajumulco!
