Berlin sunset walk after a fabulous Time to Listen Conference Akademie der Künste with Initiative Neue Musik Berlin / field notes. Lots of questions, conversations + ideas around sustainability and climate within the Contemporary Music Sector, particularly from an ensemble’s view point. 🙌 on the 5th Time to listen…. #climatechange #Sustainability #environmentalawareness by @powercomposer

Striking and wonderful performance from Ensemble KNM Berlin tonight of Jürg Frey’s piece @ Ensemblefest. Lots of great music, but this was a standout for me. 🙌 to all of the fab performers, composers, crew, organisers and of course funders of this really inspiring showcase of Berlin ensembles. Inspired! 🙌 by @powercomposer

One month since the release of Karen Power's 'listening between poles' 💿️

'listening between poles' contains a selection of compositions based on Karen Power's sonic pole-to-pole; featuring field recordings from the composer's journey between the North and South Pole. The works were created over a ten year period between 2013 - 2023. Artists featured include the @rteconcertorchestra, Isabelle O'Connell (@izzypianonyc)and Barbara Lüneberg (violin).

📸 Photos from the album launch in early September at the Contemporary Music Centre. RTÉ lyric fm's Ellen Cranitch formally launched the release, followed by a live improvised set by Karen Power, John Godfrey, Anthony Kelly and David Stalling. CMC was also delighted to welcome James Bingham, Head of Music and Opera at the Arts Council Ireland.

How do you make music with a melting glacier?

Composer Karen Power drops hydrophones into Arctic waters to let the ice speak for itself. In our latest artist interview, Karen shares how she preserves Earth’s changing soundscapes and brings the voice of the ice to the concert stage.

🙏 to RTÉ lyric fm 📻 + The Blue of the Night with Bernard Clarke for featuring each of the tracks from my new 💿 listening between poles just released on Farpoint Recordings
Last night’s program featured the opening orchestral + Antarctica duet performed by RTÉ Concert Orchestra. Bernard had a very strong reaction to this work, which pleases me greatly…not for the faint-hearted!!!!
Tune in all week to 👂 loaded silence with Isabelle 'Izzy' O'Connell, sonic cradle with Barbara Lueneburg and finally the poles themselves in the title work of this release. Thank you Bernard. by @powercomposer

Ever wondered what feeds a composer’s ears and mind between projects?

Composer Karen Power recently sat down with RTÉ Culture to share the books, art, soundscapes, and late-night shows shaping her world right now.

From sci-fi and underwater marine life chatter off the coast of Kinsale to the hypnotic magic of Midnight Diner, her curated list is a deep dive into pure inspiration.

A few highlights from her list:

• Reading: Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez
• Watching: Midnight Diner
• Listening: Underwater ocean chatter
• Tech: Chirp! a bird-call app for wetland walks
• Art: Tjanpi Desert Weavers at MCA Australia

Head to www.rte.ie/culture/ to read her full feature and explore all of her recommendations over on RTÉ!

Excited to have my own copy of Karen Power’s beautifully produced new album ‘listening between poles’. Each work features field recordings of Arctic or Antarctic ice from Karen’s expeditions, including a solo work written for me in 2015 ‘loaded silence’. We recorded this in January 2024 so I’m delighted it’s finally seeing the light of day!
