Players need reminding more than new teaching. Every year, returners and new players both need the expectations again.

New team you don't know? Let them play first. Watch what they already know.

Coach every little thing on day one? You're fixing problems you haven't seen yet.

Duke's coaching clinics go back over fundamentals every year. Offense, defense, all of it.

What we trained last year won't just carry over.

New coaches need the game's framework, not a seminar. Skip the five-man rotation. Learn the seven phases of the game first.

Most coach training is a seminar at the start of the year. The topic is one someone else picked.

A new coach needs the frame. The phases, and how they relate to each other.

Face-off. Offensive transition. Settled offense. How that turns into how we clear.

Without the frame, he gets all the pieces and nowhere to put them.

Your off-season plan won't matter if they can't catch. Youth coaches, this one's for the first practice.

You get new players every year. So you spend the off-season building the offense, the defense, the playbook.

Then practice starts and none of the kids can pass and catch.

You don't know these players yet. So don't script every rep on day one.

Walk into the first practice and let them just play.

Then build the plan for the team you actually have.

Why your players won't work outside of practice. It's usually not that they don't care.

Most of the time, it's the practice we give them. If practice isn't fun, why would a kid put in work on his own?

Then there's the workout.

At the high school level, your attackmen and your defenders need different work. The same general list misses the boat.

A kid gives his time when the work fixes what he needs to fix.

Why lacrosse advice depends on your team. A sixth-grade team and a high school JV team need two different answers.

How many kids do you have? How many practices a week?

Start there, and the advice gets better.

I once told an eighth-grade group to split into an A and B team.

A coach commented. They ran two teams at the same level, and they all got better.

That's great. I'm often wrong.

You're only making players if you can watch them fail. Yelling every cue in the drill hides who's lost.

Hold the cue, and you see who doesn't know his job yet.

Yell it, and you're the one making him slide. Not what he saw.

Teach it first. Here's what you'll see. Here's the choice you make.

Then let him make it. If he misses, you talk after. Maybe you were a little late.

Now he sees the right thing and gets to try again.

A kid who follows directions, or a kid who plays the game. Your drill decides.

Your work makes the best player on your team better. Your pass decides how much time he gets.

Say you're a middie. You split down the alley. You throw behind the goal to the attackman running up the opposite hash.

Put it behind him and he loses half a step.

Put it on the money and he saves half a second. Now the rotation is late. He gets more time to make his read.

The good players aren't just good. Everybody's work makes them better.

One program I heard about holds back helmet stickers. You earn them with wall ball before the season.

Rec coaches and players both need something to use. The coach gives his time. So do the players.

In rec programs all over the country, the coaches are still learning the game. So are the players.

The coach needs to know what to do. Most are volunteers.

The players need two answers. How do I improve? What is my coach asking me to do?

Give the coach a framework and leave the players out, and it stalls.

Players get something they can use. Coaches get the means to deliver it. Then the teams begin to work.

Explaining it doesn't make it work. My K-1 team didn't get the ride for about a week after we explained it.

We lined up our kindergarten and first graders and told them when the ride happens.

None of them got it. They hadn't just been on offense.

Make a pass, run, watch the other kid pick up the ball. Now they're in the moment that calls for the ride.

Face, chase, toe the line. That's what we give attackmen.

Face the ball so the pass goes sideways, not upfield. Chase if it gets past you. End with your toes on the midline.

For my K-1 kids, it only stuck inside the game.
