A response to @sakata.ken recent thoughts on design and sustainability.

"If I love something, I will wear it often."

It’s an aesthetically pleasing quote, and on a micro-level, it feels intuitively right. But it fails catastrophically from a systemic point of view. It attempts to treat a structural flaw with an individualized, consumer-level band-aid.

The idea that "good design is sustainable design" ignores the fact that the word "design" itself – as a concept divorced from the act of physical craftsmanship – emerged precisely because of the capitalist industrial mode of scaling production.

When a system's primary directive is profit and infinite scaling, it actively incentivizes fragility and planned obsolescence. It requires you to stop wearing that garment eventually so you can buy another one.

Humanity already possessed perfectly designed, deeply sustainable products for centuries before the word for it even existed, simply because craftspeople built things to survive physical reality, not quarterly earnings reports.

You cannot fix a production-side requirement for infinite turnover by simply asking consumers to form deeper emotional bonds with mass-produced aesthetic shells. That is a fundamental contradiction.

I’ve barely posted any recordings from my time in Bali and Taiwan. Hard to believe it’s already been almost half a year since I was there. So many precious experiences and people…
In the back of my mind, I still feel the need to gather all my photos and share the best ones. Unfortunately, I’ve lost access to all my Taiwan pics and haven’t made the time to recover them from my old phone.
There’s just so much going on all the time—but I’m sure I’ll get to it eventually.
