We would like to regretfully inform all of the fans of our beloved goats here at Los Penasquitos that our beautiful boy Jam passed away yesterday afternoon.

He passed peacefully surrounded by familiar and loving faces. He has had some ongoing health issues for quite a while now. After much professional intervention, advice and discussions, we made the very tough decision to let him rest.

We appreciate all the love and support all the goats have gotten over the years and now more than ever Holly and Pearl can certainly use some extra attention and positive interactions.

Thank you all so much! 😢 by @pqgoats

When the trails feel quieter and the Ranch House slows down, a different kind of work begins.
Behind the scenes, staff and volunteers are repairing fences, cleaning and organizing spaces, caring for the goats and pigs, monitoring plants and wildlife, and getting ready for the busy spring season. While it may look calm on the surface, there’s always something happening to keep this place healthy and welcoming.
The off-season is about stewardship - making sure the Ranch House, its history, and its landscapes are ready to be shared for generations to come. 💚 taken in Los Penasquitos Ranch House by @pqgoats

Where are the bugs? Many insects seem to disappear in winter - but they haven’t gone far.
As temperatures drop, insects use a survival strategy called diapause. Instead of staying active, they pause their development and conserve energy until warmer days return. Some species overwinter as eggs, others as larvae, pupae, or even adults, tucked safely into soil, leaf litter, bark, or plant stems.
So while it may feel like the bugs are gone, the landscape is simply resting and resetting. 🌱✨ taken in Los Penasquitos Ranch House by @pqgoats

Trails are closed all day today due to flooding and wet trails. While we all love the rain, our trails are hydrophobic from months of lack of rain. This leads to soft ground and erosion and is much easier to damage when walked on or ridden on. Please help us in maintaining our trails by letting them dry completely! Thank you 😊 by @pqgoats

If you’ve ever spotted a neon-green, brain-textured “fruit” on the ground and wondered what on earth is that? - you’ve met the Osage orange. Despite the name, it’s not an orange at all, and very few animals eat it today. Many scientists believe the Osage orange originally evolved to be eaten by Ice Age animals like mammoths, mastodons, and giant ground sloths - all long extinct now. Without their ancient partners, the tree still produces its big, bumpy fruit… with no one around to snack on it.
This tree is native to the south-central United States, far from our canyon, but it’s been planted here and there across the country for windbreaks, fencing, and curiosity alone.
The tree is tough, drought-resilient, and can live for decades. If you come across one on the trail, take a moment to appreciate this quirky survivor from another part of the country - a living relic of both ecological and cultural history 🌿✨
