You don’t have to pass on everything you inherited.

Every generation has an opportunity to look at what was handed to them and decide:

What do I want to keep?

What do I want to change?

What do I want my children to experience differently?

If your own religious upbringing involved fear, guilt, pressure, shame, or confusion, it can be difficult to know how much of that experience should influence the way you raise your children.

But you don’t have to choose between giving your children a connection to your religious tradition and protecting them from the things that hurt you.

You can be intentional.

You can create space for questions.

You can teach your values without teaching your children to be afraid of questioning them.

And you can build a religious life that gives your family connection rather than creating more distance.

That’s the kind of work that sits at the heart of Practice Your Way.

💬 If you’re thinking about your own family’s religious legacy, comment “LEGACY” below and follow me for more conversations about faith, family, identity, and connection.

It doesn’t always have to be all or nothing.

One of the most painful places to be is wanting religion in your life while feeling like the only way to have it is to return to a version of it that no longer feels healthy or authentic.

That can leave you feeling completely stuck.

But there is another question worth asking:

“What would a healthy relationship with my faith look like if I were allowed to approach it intentionally?”

That might mean reconnecting with practices you genuinely value.

It might mean questioning things you’ve always been told.

It might mean creating new traditions with your family.

And it might mean figuring out what you want to carry forward, and what you don’t.

You don’t have to abandon yourself to belong.

If you’re working through this, follow along and learn more about how you can Practice Your Way.

Reconnecting doesn't mean going back to who you were. A lot of people miss something about their faith, but the only version they know is the one that hurt them. So reconnecting feels like signing up for all of it again.

There's a difference between returning and rebuilding. Returning means becoming who you were. Rebuilding means you ask the hard questions, name what hurt, and decide what you carry forward, as the adult you are now.

Start with one question: what do I want my faith to feel like now?

Comment REBUILD and tell me.

Your child might not always need advice, a solution, or a lesson. Sometimes, they need to know that they can tell you the truth without immediately being judged or corrected.

Listening doesn’t mean agreeing with everything your child says. It means being willing to understand their perspective before responding with yours.

The connection you build during the difficult conversations can make it easier for your child to come to you when it matters most.

What do you think would change if your child knew they could talk to you about anything?

Comment CONNECTION below. Like, follow, and save this post for your next conversation with your child.

Your kids will inherit your faith, including the parts that hurt you.

Not because you'll teach them. Because you'll carry them.

The rules nobody explained. The questions you weren't allowed to ask. The guilt that came with every "should."

You don't have to throw your tradition away to protect your kids from it. And you don't have to repeat it exactly as it was handed to you.

Try this tonight:
📜 List one: What did I receive that I still love?
🩹 List two: What did I receive that still hurts?

The first list is your inheritance. The second is your work.

Heal it so you can hand it over.

Which list was longer for you? 👇
Comment LEGACY and I'll send you the full exercise.

When your child questions something you deeply believe in, it can be difficult not to take it personally.

You may immediately want to explain, correct, defend, or remind them why your family does things a certain way.

But before you do, try getting curious.

What is your child actually trying to understand?

You can maintain your values while still making room for your child’s questions.

You can disagree without shutting down the conversation.

And you can listen without feeling like you’re giving up your beliefs.

Sometimes the strongest connection comes from being willing to say:

“Tell me more.”

If you’ve experienced this with your child, comment “QUESTIONS” below.

Passing down family values isn’t simply about making sure your children follow every rule.

It’s also about helping them understand what those values mean, why they matter to your family, and giving them space to develop their own relationship with them.

That can be uncomfortable.

Especially when your child starts questioning traditions or seeing things differently from you.

But a conversation doesn’t have to threaten your values.

It can actually give your family an opportunity to understand one another more deeply.

This is where curiosity matters.

Instead of only asking, “How do I get my child to follow this?”

Try asking, “What is my child experiencing, and what can I learn from that?”

As the school year begins, consider starting one conversation about your family’s values that goes beyond rules.

Comment “VALUES” if this is something you’re thinking about with your family.

When your child questions something you deeply value, it can feel personal.

You may worry that they’re rejecting your family, your traditions, or the beliefs you worked so hard to pass down.

But questioning doesn’t automatically mean rejection.

Sometimes, it means your child is trying to understand what they’ve been taught and figure out what it means to them.

You don’t have to abandon your values to make room for their questions.

And you don’t have to shut down their questions to hold onto your values.

The conversation itself can become an opportunity to build trust, curiosity, and a healthier relationship with each other.

If this is something you’re navigating with your child, comment “QUESTIONS” or send me a message.

Questioning your faith doesn’t automatically mean you’re losing it.

Sometimes a question is simply an invitation to understand yourself and your beliefs more deeply.

You might be questioning something because of a painful experience.

You might be questioning because you’ve grown and your understanding has changed.

You might be questioning because you want your religious practice to feel more authentic instead of simply doing something because you were told you should.

None of those questions have to be answered immediately.

And you don’t have to decide that you’re either completely in or completely out.

There can be room for curiosity, exploration, tradition, change, and growth.

For me, that’s a big part of what Practice Your Way means.

It’s not about telling you what your relationship with religion should look like.

It’s about helping you become confident enough to understand and practice it in a way that feels healthy and authentic to you.

💬 If you’ve ever felt guilty for questioning your faith, comment “CURIOUS” below and follow me for more conversations like this.

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t knowing what you believe.

It’s figuring out what belongs to you and what you’ve inherited from other people.

If religion has become complicated because of guilt, family expectations, painful experiences, or simply years of feeling disconnected, you don’t necessarily have to make one giant decision about your faith.

Start with curiosity.

Ask yourself:

What feels difficult?

What do I miss?

What would practicing my faith honestly look like for me?

Those questions can open up a lot more possibilities than “I either have to do everything or nothing.”

If this resonates with you, follow along and start learning how to Practice Your Way.

There are conversations we avoid because we’re afraid of what the truth might change.

Sometimes that fear is justified.

Not every relationship is safe enough for complete vulnerability, and setting boundaries can be healthier than forcing a conversation.

But sometimes we call it “keeping the peace” when what we’re really doing is avoiding discomfort.

And the longer we avoid saying what needs to be said, the more space resentment has to grow.

Before having a difficult conversation, get clear about three things:

What am I actually trying to say?

What do I need from this person?

What am I willing to accept if they don’t respond the way I hope?

You can’t control someone else’s response.

But you can control whether you communicate your truth with honesty, clarity, and intention.

💬 Is there a conversation you’ve been avoiding? Comment “CONVERSATION” if this hit home, and follow me for more conversations about relationships, identity, and personal growth.

We often confuse helping someone with fixing their problem.

Especially when it’s someone we love.

When a spouse, teenager, child, friend, or family member is struggling, it can feel almost impossible to simply sit back and listen.

We want to make it better.

We want to give them the answer.

We want to protect them from whatever is hurting them.

But connection doesn’t always come from having the perfect solution.

Sometimes it comes from asking better questions.

Instead of immediately giving advice, try getting curious:

“What’s been going on for you?”

“What feels hardest about this?”

“What do you need from me right now?”

These questions create space for the other person to feel heard rather than judged or corrected.

And sometimes, that space is exactly where meaningful communication begins.

💬 If you want to get better at communicating with the people you love, comment “LISTEN” and follow me for more conversations like this.
