Italians don’t really do brunch. We do long lunches that drift into the afternoon.

At Posto Italiano, the weekend menu sits somewhere in between. Ricotta pancakes for the sweet side of the table, eggs with ventricina and porcini for the rest, and a mimosa or a Campari Spritz depending on how the morning is going.

Nobody hurries you out the door, and that part is very Italian.

Weekends at Posto Italiano, Mužíkova 1, Praha 4 Nusle, inside Nuselský pivovar.

I always eat with my eyes first. Then with my mouth. And there’s food that feeds my soul.

Kačka cooks everything at Topinka in house, with ingredients from around Český Krumlov, and every plate carries her signature. Colorful, precise, unmistakably hers.

Worth the trip on its own. And if you want to sit at the same table with us, we’re cooking together at Topinka on November 7th.

A month after Langhe, I’m still thinking about it.

@gaultmillau_czech and @gaultmillau_italy brought us to the Langhe on a press trip, and what I came home with wasn’t one plate or one bottle. It was the way the whole place works.

We tasted wine at @revawinery and @cascinaebreo, had dinner at @ristorante_fre, ate at @cucinadecanto, and spent a morning in the woods hunting truffles with Pina. Behind much of it is @langheexperience, who have spent twenty years connecting hotels, small farmers, producers and restaurants into one way of travelling.

What struck me is how naturally everyone belonged to the same story. The winemaker, the cook, the host. Each one pointing to the others.

Prague has real talent. What it’s still missing, I think, is the habit of building something together instead of side by side. I’d like to help change that.

Pizza, pasta, tiramisù. Trdelník, goulash, beer.

I’m Italian and I’ve lived in Prague for fourteen years, and both of my food cultures get introduced to the world through the same three dishes. They aren’t wrong. They’re simply the ones that travel: easy to photograph, easy to sell, easy to explain.

What gets lost is everything else. In Italy the food changes from region to region, often from one town to the next. Here, what people actually cook on an ordinary Tuesday rarely makes it onto a menu near the Old Town Square.

So this time I made two lists, one for each side of my table. The dishes I’d want you to know before the famous three.

Not an expert, just curious. Tell me the dish your country gets reduced to, and the one it deserves to be known for.

Prague Food Guide is leaving Prague for a few days.
Destination: Český Krumlov in autumn, when the town finally stops being a swarming tourist anthill. The summer crowds are gone, the mist sits on the Vltava in the morning, and Krumlov goes back to being a town. Save this for your next weekend.

🚗 Getting there
Our Cupřička made the drive south a pleasure, but you don’t need a car. RegioJet or FlixBus from Anděl / Na Knížecí takes about 2 hours 30. Or take the train to Český Krumlov station and walk down into the centre. No excuses, go on an adventure! Thank you @cuprazletiste & @autopalacecz

@monasterygarden_rooms (Klášterní 49)
Our home base in Krumlov with real perks for you: code PFG20 gives you 20% off, and it combines with 300 CZK off when you book more than one night. Valid until 26 November, so the whole autumn is covered.

@bistro_na_krajicku (Klášterní 49)
Same address, inside the 16th century house. Order the toasted vánočka with brown butter and cream. Tastes like childhood, with better manners.

@bistro_topinka (Rooseveltova 34)
Serious toasts, and a weekday lunch of soup plus a main for 180 CZK. I checked the menu twice. On 7 November we’re hosting a full day pop up here with Kateřina Kučerová. Trust Carolinka, be there.

@port_1560 (Pivovarská 27)
Krumlov’s modern cultural and interactive centre. “Cesta za světlem” wraps up on 17 October, so you have days, not weeks.

🍂 A chilly breeze or a bit of rain is not a reason to stay home. Wear the warm coat and go anyway. Respect the season. Slow down. Enjoy. taken in Český Krumlov by @prague.foodguide

Meglio tardi che mai, as we say in Italy. I finally made it to Marie B, and I had so much fun.

The format is a game. Four courses, no menu, and you find out what you ate only after you’ve eaten it. The idea comes from Marie B. Svobodová’s 1894 cookbook, rebuilt with local ingredients and a lot of playfulness.

I guessed some dishes right. I got others completely wrong. Both felt like winning.

Wine, cocktails and non alcoholic pairings follow the same logic, so the whole evening plays with taste, not just the plates. The Discovery pairing balances the familiar and the unexpected well, and an Utopia cider is always a pleasure to end on.

One of my favourite life mottos is “let yourself be surprised”, and this dinner was a very good example of how fun that can be.

September Food Adventures 🪁

The Mňamdopiči took me to wonderful places, as always.
Why am I still so surprised? It keeps introducing me to wonderful people and this wonderful adventure keeps getting better and better and meglio and meglio.
Allora. Scroll, reading is optional because I know it’s a lot, but trust me, it’s also really funny.

Mňamdopiči saved me. save it too to save yourself from The Council.

• @poco_bar is a bar with immaculate vibes. Tom made me discover it and we love going back. They have a new barman, Lukaš is young but so so so talented and I love the direction this “love place” is going to. Negroni Week came and went, but “ještě jeden” stays.

• Marek and Veronika put together @groovymarketfest in tempo record. They are unstoppable. So unstoppable that last minute Marek had to put together a burger stand at their September edition and prostě jel takové bomby že si zaslouží víc. Prostě není nad dobrý burger. Jen tak dál - see you Sat Oct 3rd in Riegrač, Aaron (if you get the quote, you win a sprejček).

• giiiiiiiiirls date with Val at @kumo.prague: yapping, colouring ceramics, food and drink so aesthetic that they taste…even better than they look. Looking forward to rainy days and their winter menu.

• @richtervilla does this thing at the end of the summer…first bubblifies your head with Prosecco Fest, and then does it again at Vínobraní. I celebrate the views, the warmth of the people making this possible, and the impeccable food. Special mention to @tomas_pastas: the grappa in the parmigiano wheel was a tocco di classe impeccabile.

• Pop here, up there: we did it again at @winebar_vinohrad, Morsi&Sorsi with fuckaccia from @fuckacceria, vitello tonnato, crostini, pečený rajčata, cantucci, a brasato with funghi that made me very proud. Team work, a bit of recklessness, but a lot of gratitude to everyone involved and that supported us.
Grateful beyond words.

• if you haven’t tried @beescaferestaurant…non sai che ti perdi. This is not a hidden gem. This is a buried treasure that, once discovered, you must come back for more. @chef_anthony74 brings to the table eclectic cuisine, French savoir-faire, and an autumn menu I can’t wait to by @prague.foodguide
