Summer Studio Exhibition: Furniture Design in Copenhagen Take a look at the exhibition celebrating student work from this summer’s Furniture Design program at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) in Copenhagen! Through Pratt’s longstanding partnership with DIS, students spent six weeks immersed in Scandinavian design, exploring furniture, materials, form, and fabrication within Copenhagen’s rich design culture. The studio combined hands-on making, design exploration, and learning from the city's celebrated furniture design traditions. The exhibition brings together the outcomes of this experience, showcasing the creativity, experimentation, and craftsmanship of our students. Since 1972, Pratt and DIS have partnered to create opportunities for students to experience design education through an international perspective. #PrattIndustrialDesign #PrattInstitute #DISStudyAbroad #FurnitureDesign #Copenhagen #ScandinavianDesign #StudentWork #StudyAbroad by @pratt_sod
Join the School of Design for an open conversation with Dr. Hartmut Esslinger, the pioneering designer and founder of frog design, whose phrase, “form follows emotion”, became the touchstone of a generation. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Esslinger has worked at the intersection of design, technology, business, and culture, creating products and visual languages that continue to shape how we experience the world. From developing Apple’s famous Snow White design language alongside Steve Jobs to creating influential work for Sony, NeXT, and Lufthansa, Esslinger has helped define some of the most recognizable designs of the modern era. As the 2026 recipient of the Rowena Reed Kostellow Award, he joins Pratt ID for a conversation and open Q&A moderated by Tucker Viemeister. @tuckerviemeister by @pratt_sod

Join us at the School of Design for a talk by the founder of the British spectacle brand Cubbits. The talk will take place on October 28th from 6:00 to 7:30pm. It will be held in Pratt Studios 401 in the Curran Design Center. Register at the link in bio. Tom Broughton is the founder of Cubitts, the British spectacle maker he established in King’s Cross, London, in 2013. His approach brings together spectacle design, architecture and manufacturing, with close attention to materials, proportion and how objects are made and used. Cubitts has 20 stores, including two in Manhattan. Each is individually designed in response to ?its building, neighbourhood and history, applying the same care to the spaces as to ?the spectacles themselves. Tom has also overseen the opening of a 13,000-square-foot modern manufactory in London and a workshop in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Both reflect his belief that design and making belong together, combining traditional craft with new tools and production methods. #spectacledesign #design #fashion by @pratt_sod

Designing for Space: NASA Task Light Heinz Naing @heinz.naingg and Ilana Price @ilanaprice_ had the opportunity to collaborate with NASA designers and engineers through a project in Junior Design Studio with Professor Rebeccah Pailes-Friedman @rebeccah.pf . This real-world collaboration brought Pratt Industrial Design students together with industry experts to explore design challenges in the unique environment of space. Focused on improving intra-vehicular activity (IVA), the project challenged students to consider the needs of astronauts working inside a spacecraft and translate human needs and technical constraints into thoughtful design solutions. An exciting example of how Industrial Design brings together hands-on problem-solving, human-centered design, and interdisciplinary collaboration to address challenges beyond Earth. #PrattIndustrialDesign #PrattID #IndustrialDesign #NASA #SpaceDesign #HumanCenteredDesign #LightingDesign #DesignEducation #PrattInstitute by @pratt_sod

Join us on Oct. 6 from 12:00 - 1:30 pm in Pratt Studios 401 for a talk by Garrett Benisch. Designing for Impact Lessons learned by a Pratt MID Alum ‘19 The interface of design and society is one most primed to initiate change and make an impact...but where do you start? In this discussion, Pratt MID ‘19 Alumni Garrett Benisch will share lessons learned carving a pathway toward impact before, during, and after his time at Pratt. Garrett is currently in his sixth year applying his thesis work at scale, transforming sewage sludge into a carbon-negative material for use in industry. He began a focus on design for impact as a fellow at MASS Design Group in Kigali, Rwanda, prior to his time at Pratt. A presentation by Garrett will follow an open discussion meant to aid any student looking to direct their projects toward research-based impact. About Garret: Garrett Benisch is Chief Development Officer at Bioforcetech Corporation, a Bay Area company turning organic waste into carbon negative materials. Garrett has been co-developing OurCarbon, Bioforcetech's flagship product made from wastewater sludge, for various markets ranging from concrete to fashion. As a municipally derived material used in industry, Garrett spends time at the intersection between public infrastructure, policy, science, and new markets. We look forward to seeing you there! #design #sustainability #carbon #materialscience by @pratt_sod

Giorgia Lupi: Data Humanism Sept 23, 6:00 - 7:30pm The School of Design is pleased to host a lecture by renowned designer Giorgia Lupi. She will present Data Humanism, the philosophy at the center of her practice. Data represents real life, a snapshot of the world in the same way a picture catches a small moment in time, and it is primarily human-made. Numbers are always placeholders for something else: knowledge, behaviors, people. Yet in the impersonality of a merely technical approach, that connection can get lost. The more ubiquitous data becomes, the more we need to make it unique, contextual, and intimate. So how do we bring data back to human life? In her talk, Giorgia Lupi presents Data Humanism, the philosophy at the center of her practice and the subject of her first TED Talk in 2017. It calls on designers to embrace complexity, move beyond standards by sketching with data, always sneak context in, and remember that data is imperfect, so that design can convey knowledge and inspire feelings at the same time. Trained as an architect, with a PhD in Design from Politecnico di Milano, Lupi co-founded Accurat in 2011 and joined Pentagram as a partner in 2019. She shares the thinking behind projects such as Dear Data, now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and 1,374 Days: My Life with Long COVID, her visual op-ed in The New York Times, which won the Compasso d'Oro in 2025. A 2022 National Design Award winner, she makes the case for a second wave of data visualization, one that connects numbers to what they really stand for. Giorgia Lupi is an award-winning information designer and a partner at the international design consultancy, Pentagram. Her work synthesizes data and storytelling in innovative ways to create unique and singular brand expressions for clients such as Google, IBM, Gates Foundation, and The New York Times. Her vibrant and inspiring design work empowers leading global organizations to achieve their mission through data-driven storytelling, and reflects her belief that data has the capacity to make us all more human—advancing our intelligence, engagement, and delight. From the studio to the streets of New York City. We're excited to see the work of graduating MID student Charlie Grisham featured in Pratt Institute x The Village West: Windows on 14th Street, a new public installation transforming vacant storefront windows into a showcase of Pratt student work along the 14th Street corridor. The exhibition brings student work beyond the classroom and gallery walls, connecting Union Square to the Meatpacking District through the power of art, design, and creative education. Charlie's project, Fear/Not, reimagines the traditional scarecrow through a systems-based approach to sustainable agriculture. By studying bird behavior in vineyards, the project explores how wind-powered, humane deterrents can help protect crops while supporting the wellbeing of people, animals, and the environment. This collaboration with @thevillagewest reflects Pratt's commitment to demonstrating how design can be a force for good—connecting communities and activating public space through creative practice. Congratulations, Charlie, on sharing your work with New York City! #PrattInstitute #PrattDesign #IndustrialDesign #MID #DesignForGood #PublicDesign #NYCDesign #SustainableDesign #StudentWork #WindowsOn14thStreet by @pratt_sod
