Earlier today, we joined our grantee, Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (@prawa_org), at the Nigerian Correctional Service in Gwagwalada, for the presentation of starter packs to individuals who have successfully completed their non-custodial sentences.

During their sentencing period, these individuals underwent intensive vocational training across key trades, including farming, hairdressing, welding, graphics, and printing. Having now fully served their time, PRAWA equipped them with vital business assets today to help them launch productive, self-sustaining ventures.

This intervention addresses the core socioeconomic drivers of minor offenses in Nigeria, where economic hardship and the need for financial empowerment frequently push individuals into crime. By providing these tools, the initiative effectively:

1️⃣ Combats poverty by opening up immediate avenues for wealth creation
2️⃣ Eliminates the idleness that often leads back to criminal behavior
3️⃣ Decongests correctional facilities by keeping low-risk offenders out of prison, and
4️⃣ Recreates former convicts into community mentors who will train future cohorts.

This milestone directly advances the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) II Programme’s commitment to effective criminal justice reform.

By backing the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) and PRAWA, we are ensuring that non-custodial measures under the Nigerian Correctional Services Act becomes a highly functional, restorative reality⚖️

#HappeningNow🔊: Leadership and Strategic Reflection Retreat for Civil Society Organization Networks and Platforms.

The expansion of civil society organizations in Nigeria over the past three decades has brought increased expectations for them to demonstrate strong standards of integrity, transparency, accountability and institutional effectiveness, while navigating evolving regulations, civic space challenges and changing development priorities.

🎓 Building Capacity. Strengthening Justice. Preparing the Next Generation of Paralegal Educators.

PRAWA held a Training of Trainers (ToT) Workshop at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, on 13th–14th August 2026.

The activity began with a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, who warmly welcomed the PRAWA team and participating lecturers and expressed his support and anticipation for the commencement of the University's Paralegal Programme.

The two-day workshop featured:

📌 Opening remarks by the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Michael Ezenwa

📌 An overview of the project and the role of the ToT in the institutionalisation strategy by the President of PRAWA

📌 Group assignments and practical learning activities

📌 Group presentations and constructive feedback

📌 A session on “Effective Training Methodology” by Dr. Uju Agomoh

The workshop is another important step towards equipping lecturers with the knowledge and skills needed to support sustainable Paralegal education and strengthen access to justice.

Strengthening Non-Custodial Justice in Plateau State

Civil Society Organisations and justice-sector stakeholders in Plateau State have reaffirmed the importance of stronger advocacy, collaboration and public awareness to support the effective implementation of Non-Custodial Measures (NCMs).

This was the focus of a one-day CSO Sensitisation Workshop on Non-Custodial Measures, held on 19 August 2026 by Prisoners' Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA) in partnership with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from the civil society, security, peacebuilding, human rights and justice sectors to deepen their understanding of alternatives to imprisonment and strengthen coordinated action towards criminal justice reform.

Participants also agreed to sustain engagement beyond the workshop through a dedicated platform for information sharing, coordination and follow-up advocacy.

Effective Non-Custodial Measures can help reduce unnecessary imprisonment, support rehabilitation and reintegration, and contribute to a fairer and more humane criminal justice system.

Sustained advocacy and collective action remain essential to turning legal provisions into meaningful change.

Strengthening Non-Custodial Justice in Anambra State

Stakeholders in criminal justice administration, civil society and the Nigerian Correctional Service have called for stronger advocacy, improved funding and more effective implementation of non-custodial measures to help decongest correctional centres and promote a more humane and effective justice system.

The call was made during a One-Day Civil Society Stakeholders' Meeting on Non-Custodial Measures, held on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Madubuko Hall, Faculty of Social Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

The programme was organised by Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA) PRAWA in partnership with the Nigerian Correctional Service , with support from the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption , under the Advancing the Implementation of Non-Custodial Solutions (AI-NCS) Project.

Discussions focused on strengthening civil society participation and advocacy, increasing funding, advancing legal and institutional reforms, and supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of persons released from custodial centres.

In her lead presentation, Uju Agomoh PhD, internationally recognised criminologist, prison reform expert and human rights advocate, emphasised that Nigeria must move beyond having laws on paper towards ensuring their effective implementation.

Participants also examined key provisions of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, the proposed Anambra State Correctional Service Bill, and strategies for strengthening probation, parole, community service, restorative justice and other alternatives to imprisonment.

A justice system that prioritises rehabilitation, accountability and second chances is possible—but it requires sustained collaboration and action.

Together, we can build a more humane, inclusive and effective criminal justice system.

PRAWA MONITORS COMMUNITY SERVICE IMPLEMENTATION IN JOS NORTH

Recently, PRAWA conducted a monitoring visit to the Jos North Local Government Secretariat to assess the implementation of Community Service as a Non-Custodial Measure and monitor the use of reflective jackets by beneficiaries.

During the visit, Moses Agada and Monday Moses were observed carrying out their eight-week community service following their conviction by Central Area Court I, Kasuwan Nama, on 29 June 2026, for conspiracy and public nuisance.

The monitoring visit assessed compliance with the court's sentence while also promoting the effective use of reflective jackets to enhance visibility, identification, supervision, and public awareness of Community Service.

Through effective monitoring and collaboration with relevant stakeholders, PRAWA continues to support the implementation of Non-Custodial Measures that promote accountability, rehabilitation, and successful reintegration.

Strengthening the future of paralegal education in Nigeria: As efforts to institutionalise paralegal studies in Nigeria continue to gain momentum, the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) convened the 2nd Physical Network Meeting of Paralegal Training Institutions, bringing together key stakeholders committed to expanding access to justice through quality paralegal education.

The meeting was followed by a three-day review and validation exercise of the training manuals and guides for the Certificate and Bachelor’s Degree programmes in Paralegal Studies👌

Representatives of participating institutions, @prawa_org, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACON) @lacon_hq, successfully reviewed and validated the manuals, marking a significant milestone in the standardisation of paralegal training in Nigeria.

This is in alignment with the RoLAC programme’s (@rolacng) effort to expand access to justice for women, children, PWDs and other vulnerable persons. The validated manuals will serve as core curriculum resources for paralegal education programmes across Nigerian tertiary institutions, equipping the next generation of paralegals with the knowledge, practical skills, and ethical foundation required to provide frontline legal assistance🎗️
