Seven Down, One Semester to Go!

This has undoubtedly been the most challenging semester I’ve faced. Words can’t fully capture how much I’ve been tested over the past few months. But God continues to guide my steps, and I’m so blessed to be nearing the finish line.

This semester, I managed to balance 17 credits, two jobs, multiple extracurriculars, shadowing, and community service. It’s been a whirlwind, but also a time of immense growth and perseverance.

Here are a few of my favorite moments from the semester! 🩷 by @predent.diary

What is a bacteriophage? 🦠

A bacteriophage, also known as a phage, is a type of virus that specifically infects bacteria. In the spring semester, I had the privilege of presenting my research at The Annual Festival of Scholars. Throughout my junior year, I focused on isolating, purifying, and amplifying a previously undiscovered phage. This phage belongs to the Microbacterium foliorum cluster which I named “MavMan.” Alongside identifying MavMan, I worked with my classmates to characterize two phage genomes “Barroma” and “SuMoo”. This research was extensive and captivating, contributing to the millions of phages yet to be discovered. I am thankful for the opportunity to advance the field of microbial science through this research! by @predent.diary

Dreams coming true before my eyes!

Be the change you want to see in the world. Revamping this club is why I joined to begin with. Having an impressions day to expose the XU Pre-Dental Club to clinical experience has been on my heart since freshman year. To have executed it successfully alongside dentist and my team is so rewarding! We had the oppurtunity to connect with dentist in the New Orleans area, tour the dental office, learn and practice impressions and dental implants, as well as meet the LSU School of Dentistry Dean, Dr. Southerland. This event was more than I imagined thanks to Dr. Bean and Dr. Sterling.

The last picture is the goal poster the EBoard created at the beginning of the year. Successfully completing the last event of the semester, I can proudly say we completed majority of our goals. I am extremely excited to see what next year holds. by @predent.diary

Over the weekend, I attended the ADEA GoDental 2024 Recruitment Event. Holding positions on the XU Pre-Dental Club has given me the opportunity to closely connect with multiple dental schools. I always enjoy reconnecting with Dr. Spears, UTH Houston and Mr. Berry, USC. Thank you ADEA for this great day of learning and networking. Cheers to all the aspiring dentist! by @predent.diary

This past weekend, I attended the 8th annual Pre-Health Conference at UTHealth Houston. I was able to practice airway insertion, suturing, and get more insight on the six different schools within UTHealth.

I connected with Xavier Alumni Dr. McDowelle ‘89 and Dr. White ‘01 as well as my DCN family! It was great to reconnect with my SHPEP collegues, mentors, as well as the infamous Dr. Spears and Dr. Bright. Thank you SNMA and UTHealth Houston for an amazing event! taken in UTHealth Houston by @predent.diary

⭐️ Changing the world one tooth at a time!

As I grew closer to God this year the first thing on my bucket list was a mission trip. As the end of the year approaches I can officially say I completed a Dental Mission Trip in Jamaica. I was able to serve the Jamaican community by assisting with extractions, restorations, and prophy cleanings. I have been exposed to a wide variety of dental techniques and procedures that you cannot see in everyday practice. Thank you to the dental community who have guided me on this trip. You all have reminded me of my worth and to face my fears. This week we have saved many people from pain and possible life threatening issues if not assisted.

Thank you Jamaica for welcoming me with open arms and warm hearts. You all motivated and reminded me of my purpose in this field. The little things in life are important and the materialistic means within my country tend to make us ungrateful. You all opened my eyes and reminded me to cherish the simple things in life. I admire your community and can’t wait till we meet again. taken in Treasure Beach Jamaica by @predent.diary

God blessed me with such an amazing opportunity this summer! I have made some amazing mentors, friends, and list of connections that will soon diversify the healthcare field! SHPEP has validated my interest in dentistry, pushed me to believe in my abilities, as well as cease each opportunity. I have learned so much about myself in the last couple of weeks that has made me a better scholar and person.

SHPEP has built my foundation of financial literacy, language barriers in healthcare, LGBTQIA+ community, clinical experience, interview practice, professionalism, and so much more! I am extremely grateful and blessed to have been apart of the 2023 SHPEP Cohort.

To Liyah and Mark, Im going to miss our long library nights doing bible study and laughing till our stomachs ache. Thank you for your continuous love and support. I cant wait to see you both blossom as physicians!
