Predictability. Wearing orange - or army green. Telling tall tales. Kissing dogs. Who was I then? Some days I feel more like that girl now than I’ve been in almost 30 years. Some days I don’t, in the words of the illustrious Nicki Minaj, “know who the eff I is.”

Curious about so much ahead of me. Ignorant about all the beauty and ugliness the future holds.

My own weird self with no interest in conformity. I forgot who I was for a long while, but I feel it coming full circle again. #teenagedirtbag by @predictability

That spirit - the one that sent firefighters, law enforcement, EMTs and people with no training of any kind, running into two burning towers 22 years ago - that same spirit is alive and well today. You can see it all across the western U.S. during fire season. Firefighters, law enforcement, people with no training of any kind, putting themselves in harm’s way to save lives.

That spirit sustains them through 30 hours shifts, through unbreathable air, through levels of physical discomfort that most Americans will never experience. They don’t even think, they just do. They don’t waste time imagining that they might die, that this hour may be their last as they move toward the danger, they just go.

It must be done and they will do it. Here am I. Send me. This is the American Spirit.

It was on the beaches of Normandy, the islands of the pacific theater, and in the jungles of Vietnam. It was there in Gettysburg. It was there at Lexington and Concord. It was there in Mogadishu, in Benghazi, in Fallujah, in Ramadi, in the Korangal Valley. It was there during the Tet Offensive and it was there in the Chosin Reservoir.

This is the spirit that makes us great. It is the spirit that unites us, it is the spirit that knows out of the many, we are one, and that one life is worth giving for the many. Don’t let them tell you this spirit is dead. It’s alive today in Oregon, in California, in Washington State. The heartbeat of the American Spirit is strong if you listen through the roar of the voices who decry and seek to destroy us. Can you hear it?

Here am I. Send me.

This guy. Took me in as a stranger in one of the darkest moments of my life.

Picked me up from jail, the one and only time I’ve been there.

We couldn’t have been more different. He ate Lima beans straight out of the can. 🤢 He never judged. Maybe he taught me how to be more like that. His family was love. My kids loved him. My dog Truck loved him.

Now he’s gone and I’ll always be grateful for the haven he gave me. For the weird advice. For the quirks. The Japanese dolls. The BBQs in his back yard. For the giant shits of Truck’s he picked up without complaining. He was one of the greats.

Love you Ricker. Thanks for all of it. See you again soon. by @predictability

“We have lived by the assumption that what was good for us would be good for the world. And this has been based on the even flimsier assumption that we could know with any certainty what was good even for us. We have fulfilled the danger of this by making our personal pride and greed the standard of our behavior toward the world - to the incalculable disadvantage of the world and every living thing in it. And now, perhaps very close to too late, our great error has become clear. It is not only our own creativity - our own capacity for life - that is stifled by our arrogant assumption; the creation itself is stifled.

We have been wrong. We must change our lives, so that it will be possible to live by the contrary assumption that what is good for the world will be good for us. And that requires that we make the effort to know the world and to learn what is good for it. We must learn to cooperate in its processes, and to yield to its limits. But even more important, we must learn to acknowledge that the creation is full of mystery; we will never entirely understand it. We must abandon arrogance and stand in awe. We must recover the sense of the majesty of creation, and the ability to be worshipful in its presence. For I do not doubt that it is only on the condition of humility and reverence before the world that our species will be able to remain in it.” - Wendell Berry by @predictability

The man who took this picture of me is no longer with us. The man who gently, yet firmly, insisted I depart a perfectly good airplane all by myself, has launched on his own final adventure.

My first conversation with Bill Markham took place long distance from the ICP for the Pioneer Fire in the summer of 2024. We discussed how a partnership between the American Freedom Fund and RCPT-USA would work. And it has worked. We’ve been able to send veterans from all over the country and every branch of service through this life changing experience.

But that wasn’t enough. This man proceeded to remove every obstacle and excuse I laid down to avoid becoming airborne. Bill wouldn’t take no for an answer. He put me on the C-47 Tico Belle first as a passenger, knowing full well I wouldn’t be able to say no to a jump. A few months later he’d had me here - in this photo. Petrified. But doing it. Bill didn’t just help me check off a bucket list thing in my life. He redefined the bucket list entirely.

Bill was energy and passion and a driving force for good. If I leave anything behind me when I go, I pray it will be the kind of meaning he helped so many of us find along our meandering way.

His loss is immeasurable, but his impact is eternal. Rest easy Bill. You set the bar high, but we will carry the torch from here.
