DHAB most commonly refers to a Deep Hypersaline Anoxic Basin, but it can also mean an automotive current sensor, a desert lizard, or a village.

Deep Hypersaline Anoxic Basin (DHAB)What it is: A pool of extra-salty (hypersaline) water at the bottom of the ocean that contains no oxygen (anoxic).

How it forms: Long-buried salt deposits dissolve into water on the seafloor, creating a dense brine that sinks into ocean valleys and does not mix with the normal seawater above it.

Life inside: Only specialized microscopic organisms (anaerobes) that do not need oxygen can survive there. You can learn more about these extreme environments through the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

The life-sized Spinosaurus statue at the Odaiba Dinosaur Expo in Japan is a highly detailed, 15-meter-long reconstruction showcasing modern scientific understanding, including its semi-aquatic features like a crocodile-like snout and large tail. While featuring an animatronic head with realistic movement, its body was inflatable, allowing for an incredibly vivid and immersive, if somewhat unconventional, display.

The alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula) is one of North America’s largest freshwater fish and one of its oldest surviving fish lineages.

Growing to more than 3 meters (10 feet) in length and weighing over 135 kg (300 pounds), this apex predator has inhabited North American rivers for millions of years.

Its ancestors date back to the Early Cretaceous, more than 100 million years ago, meaning gars shared the planet with non-avian dinosaurs. Their elongated jaws, armor-like ganoid scales, and ambush hunting strategy have remained remarkably successful through deep time.

Although their appearance is intimidating, alligator gars rarely pose a threat to people. Instead, they play an important role in maintaining healthy freshwater ecosystems by helping regulate fish populations.

A true living relic from the Age of Dinosaurs. 🦖🐟

A breathtaking moment along the Gandak River in Bihar, India. 🐊🌊

Dozens of tiny gharial hatchlings make their first journey through the river, staying close to their father as they begin life in the wild. Male gharials are known to play an important role in protecting young during their vulnerable early stages – a rare and fascinating behavior to witness.

For a species facing severe population declines, every successful hatchling represents hope. These young gharials are not only a new generation, but also a reminder of why conservation efforts matter.

Huge respect to the teams working to protect this critically endangered species, including the Bihar Forest Department and Wildlife Trust of India for their continued dedication to gharial recovery in the Gandak River ecosystem.

The Meg 2 brings the terrifying idea of encountering the extinct megalodon, one of the largest sharks to ever exist. This giant marine predator lived millions of years after the dinosaurs disappeared, meaning it never shared the oceans with creatures like Tyrannosaurus rex.

While the movie is science fiction, it captures the fascination of prehistoric life – combining extinct predators, deep-sea exploration, and the mystery of Earth’s ancient past.

🦈 Megalodon vs Dinosaurs? A fantasy.
🌎 Prehistoric giants? A reality.

Few birds provide such a striking glimpse into their prehistoric ancestry as the Red-legged Seriema. Native to South America, this remarkable predator belongs to a lineage closely related to the extinct Phorusrhacids, commonly known as “terror birds”– large, flightless predators that once dominated South American ecosystems.

Standing around 75–90 cm (30–35 inches) tall as adults, seriemas can sprint at speeds of up to 25 km/h (15 mph). Unlike most birds, they are active hunters that feed on insects, lizards, snakes, small mammals, and other prey. Their powerful legs and sharp claws are well suited for capturing and subduing animals.

Watching one stop directly in front of me and casually display its impressive claw was an unforgettable reminder that modern birds are the last surviving descendants of theropod dinosaurs. Moments like this make the connection between today’s wildlife and the prehistoric world feel incredibly real.

That moment is a fascinating example of how animal behavior can change when a larger and more dominant species enters an environment. When an adult arapaima is introduced into a tank containing piranhas, the dynamics of the enclosure can shift almost instantly.

Despite their reputation as fierce predators, piranhas typically rely on group behavior, opportunistic feeding, and risk assessment rather than direct confrontation. The arapaima, one of the largest freshwater fishes in the world, possesses an enormous body size, thick scales, and a calm, deliberate swimming style that few tankmates are likely to challenge.

In this moment, the piranhas are not displaying fear so much as caution. By maintaining their distance, they are responding to the presence of a much larger animal that commands space through its size alone. It is a striking reminder that in nature, dominance is often determined not by aggression, but by a combination of size, behavior, and ecological role.
