An excerpt from the Tripura sundari Ashtakam, composed by Shri Shankaracharya, dedicated to Goddess Parvathi, the Jaganmatha the mother of the universe, who is called by various names in her various forms such as Durga, Tripura sundari, Shive, Mahakali, Meenakshi, Kamakshi etc.

I have set the sstotra in Raga Malayamarutha, a morning raga.

Start your day with a simple mantra, pranayama, and a few yoga asanas for better health.

I love this mantra on Lord Hanuman ( to grant knowledge, strength, success and courage, fearlessness, freedom from illness, keep me alert , excel in speech or expression)

I practice this easy pranayama, while doing my work, before singing or walking, before sleep to keep me calm, focussed and grounded.
A few yoga asanas to keep good health, to build resilience.

No matter how busy your days are, squeeze a few minutes in between your work to practice can brighten your day.

What do you do, when you record a song, when the music comes to your head and you like that first version of recording that you really did not mean to post anywhere? That is what happened to me with this recording.

T his was recorded a few years ago when I composed music for the song of the saint poet Basavanna ( 1134-1196),where the original music is lost. A very short song with a deep philosophical value. I recorded after the music formed in my head beautifully. I decided to record, so that I remember how I sang and then I went on with my regular practice as usual. I never posted this as I was in my home clothes and not dressed up.

Meaning of the song: in this song Basavanna says, why get angry at those who are angry at you, it did not help the either of you. The anger that is physical represents who that person really is, the anger that you carry in your mind, shows the awareness( or a lack of awareness) of a person.
The fire inside your house burns your house first before burning your neighbors house. O koodala sangama deva ( composers signature).
Only 6 lines in the song talking about the ill effects of excessive anger. These songs( poems) are called Vachana sahitya in Kannada language.

A twist in Akaara practice using the words in Indian classical music. The Akaara practice ( or the vowels, words that start or end with sounds Aa, Ee, Ooo, Ye, O and Um are very important in our Indian classical music ( and Western music as well), it is essential to master these techniques for a strong foundation.

Music students and professionals spend a lot of time everyday practicing these techniques to master the fluency in the above sounds for an effortless singing, that they can use in Songs, improvisation( alapane, neraval).

What if you use the words in place of the vowels? That is what I tried in this post. Being in Adhika masa in our Hindu tradition, I used the different names of Lord Vishnu ( where Lord Vishnu is worshipped).

Give it a try and see what you could come up with to improve your music.

First full crop of Blueberries from my backyard. Wait till you see the last picture as how much I got. It's been 4 years I guess after planting the blueberries, and caring for the plants,

This morning, as I let my cat out for a few minutes in the backyard I saw that blueberries have grown fully. I had to go in and bring a container as I saw many. In the past we got a handful at the most and they were sour and I sighed every time. So, that was a big surprise as soon as I got up. Just wanted to remember the happy moments with pictures. It took me a few minutes to pluck them and my w cat was happily sitting and watching things that excited her and we both came in together. Both of us were happy.

At the beautiful Jemison park. The walking trail, beautiful river and the sound of water flowing, so much greenery, the birds chirping are all so soothing and healing any stress one may have, very hilly area with tall trees, full of shade. It is very hard to imagine this unless you go on vacation. But all these are available for free at Jemison park. Two eyes are not enough to capture the beauty nature has given abundantly.
The walking trails go a long way, however long you want to walk.

Happy Mothers Day to all mothers and mother figures( men are included too).
A day in the nature. Again Aldridge botanical gardens. It looked much different with new varieties of flowers, bushes blooming, happy trees. My eyes caught one bird family soaking in the water. Same water but a different scene, enjoying a very beautiful day. A very special one was a bird family of 3, sitting together and a freshly laid egg next to them. A turtle family of 3. Another bird couple swimming in the lake. It is just that there is joy and happiness around us that we have to open our eyes to notice and take that in.

Spring at the Aldridge Botanical garden. I took these pictures and videos almost 3 weeks ago, when I decided to go for a walk at the beautiful Aldridge botanical garden. After a long winter, trees with no leaves, dried up plants, here comes the Spring season, green again and full of colors to cheer us, no matter what else is going on in and out around the world. Nature has that healing power. While the garden is the same, it looks different each time with new blooms and flowers. Come on, let’s get out and see what the nature has to offer( as long as we take care of it.
