Junie B. Jones and Fancy Nancy with their wacky outfits—that just makes sense. I wanted to design a collection that incorporates just that with different fabric, pattern, colors, and hairstyles that makes the statement.

I’m always intrigued by what I find on my explore page—especially as someone who enjoys costume designs and culture. This costume is absolutely beautiful where @skiyodu put together a Gujarati skirt and a Filipino top. “The pink top is inspired by Baro, the blouse worn as part of the historic Maria Clara esmemble.” - Skiyodu

Rather than adopting the later butterfly sleeved terno, Siyodu reference an earlier Filipino silhouette, which she enjoys layering different textiles from Afghanistan, India, Japan, etc. as part of her Decofolk. Thank you @skiyodu , for inspiring my illustration—this was one of the most challenging as there were so many details that went into this piece. If you’re into Decofolk and would like to learn more about it or captivated by the incredible costumes like I was, there’s a lot more incredible designs to see on her page. ✨🩷

I’ve been doing more research on color theory and exploring combinations that surprisingly work well together. As well as making my own patterns on procreate and Adobe Illustrator, I’m really proud of this project and how it all came together.

Part 1: Bangtan Sonyeondan

Learning about different cultures has really opened my eyes to new traditions, customs, and perspectives. From the first listen, I instantly fell in love with the album. Arirang especially stood out, since it brings in pieces of Korean history—like track No. 29, which a lot of locals have talked about and shared their own interpretations of. The sound is a scared Bell of the Great King Seongdeok, which is South Korea’s national treasure. If you’ll like to read more about the Divine Bell of King Seongdeok: www.teaching-korea.co.uk dives deeper into the history. In track No.1 Body to Body, they feature ARIRANG, a Korean folk song that can be heard near the end. This drawing a bridge between heritage to modern pop. According to Korea times, “A HYBE official said, “Chairman Bang suggested that the members imagine a scene where foreign audiences sing ‘Arirang’ together at a stadium concert.” The official added that the final decision was left to the members, who continued discussions after returning to Seoul before ultimately choosing to include the traditional melody.” I’m happy that they decided to include it into the song. However, I took it upon myself to learn more about the history and found that, People often say that music can rise above boundaries of race, language, and belief—and “Arirang,” a traditional Korean folk song, is a clear example of this idea. Its history and origins are rich with symbolism, expressing a wide range of emotions, from grief and resentment to warmth and happiness.

Passed down through generations, “Arirang” has an uncertain origin. Although researchers have studied the song since the 1930s, its beginnings remain unclear, with more than 20 different origin stories recorded and none confirmed as definitive. This ambiguity may explain why the song exists in so many forms, varying by region across Korea. In fact, there are over 3,000 lyrical variations and around 50 melodic versions. Among these, the most commonly performed are “Jeongseon Arirang,” “Jindo Arirang,” and “Miryang Arirang.”

To be continued…..

Part 2: Bangtan Sonyeondan

Alien touches on some deeper, heavier topics, and has made its way into my top five.
To wrap things up, I wanted to touch on the Black history and culture connected to BTS’s new album ARIRANG, which came into focus after a promotional video sparked backlash and highlighted a forgotten piece of history tied to Howard University . “Howard opened its doors to house and educate seven Korean students during a time of political upheaval in their country, as chronicled in a local newspaper. According to WETA, the students gained notoriety on their first night after stunning the Howard community with a melodious singing performance on campus, which was soon described in a story in the Washington Post. Three of the students were then invited by a prominent ethnologist to record songs on wax cylinders, including a version of “Arirang,” the unofficial national folk song of both South Korea and North Korea, which is the first known recording of a Korean voice in the United States and the first recording of the song anywhere in the world. The recording is now housed at the Library of Congress as a seminal piece of American and world history. The Library of Congress identified the students as Ahn Jeong-Sik, Lee Hee-Cheol, and Son Rong.” -Howard University

BTS debuted as a hip-hop group with their lead single “No More Dream” from 2 Kool 4 Skool before venturing into different genres. Many longtime fans have noted that ARIRANG feels like a return to their roots in hip-hop and have expressed that the album feels like a more mature version of older albums such as Dark & Wild and Wings. The group collaborated with multiple Black producers known for their work in hip-hop, electronic, and alternative music. Below is a list of the producers credited on the album:

Teezo Touchdown
JPEGMAFIA
Mike Will Made It
Kirsten Allyssa Spencer
Ant Clemons
Derrick Milano
Asheton Hogan/Pluss
Brandon Bell/Donut
Charles Hinshaw
Atia Boggs
Livvi Franc

Textiles and Materials: Iran

In Iran, we’re focusing on the Bandari women of the southern Hormozgan province. The textile design featured on the scarf is called Khoos Doozi. According to Fatemeh Askarieh, “Khoos Doozi is a traditional Iranian needlework which uses narrow plastic strips in various colours for sewing on different clothing.” Gold and silver strips are especially popular, and historically the thread used was made of silver. Although there is no reliable written history, the art was widespread during the Safavid dynasty, particularly in Sistan and Baluchestan and the port city of Bandar Abbas.

Khoos (plastic or metallic strips) are typically sewn onto lace and velvet fabrics using a special needle, such as a chenille needle for velvet. However, some artisans practice a variation of the technique in which extremely fine metallic ribbons are hand-woven directly into the fabric mesh without a needle. This method creates a mirrored effect where both sides of the fabric appear identical and luminous.

This decorative art is used on scarves, lace chadors (often dark or black), bridal dresses, pants, cushion covers, hats, vests, and more. Common patterns include Nine Bricks, Beehive, Six Hearts, Polygon Star, Fig Leaf’s Margin, Butterfly, Crab, and others. Khoos Doozi can also be combined with sequins and braid to create intricate designs. Today, the craft remains widespread in Hormozgan, Sistan and Baluchestan, Fars, Bushehr, and Kurdistan provinces.”

The mask featured in this design is traditionally worn by Khaleeji Arab, Persian, and Baluch women. Styles vary by region: in the United Arab Emirates, designs like the “Zabeel cut” (narrow at the top, broad at the bottom) are common in Dubai. In Qatar and Bahrain, masks tend to have a more square shape. In Oman, they are typically larger and broader at the top. In Iran, mask color can indicate religious affiliation; for example, Shia women in some southern provinces traditionally wear red rectangular masks, while Sunni women often wear black or indigo masks with gold detailing.

If I’m missing anything, please let me know in the comments.
