Chau

This is my final film at esa! Thanks to everyone who came to Grad Gala and to my folks and to johnson and novak and morgan and ofcourse, jack marshall and his trombone.

Chau is the first film i’ve made that is completely hand drawn, traditionally animated, graphite on paper. It was a very tedious and lengthy process but I really enjoyed it. This is also maybe my most honest film yet so it feels very scary to share with the world, but you guys are nice so it’s okay.

This is my final gr 11 film called Marty which won the Shaftesbury award for my grade! I am soso grateful for all of my friends and fam thankyou for all for your kind words I love and appreciate all of you so much!!

I don’t usually talk about my films and I kind like the mysterious vibe of not knowing buut this one’s a little weird so heres a bit of my artist statement if ur curious…

When I was little, I would wake up really early on the weekends to eat a whole box of Ritz crackers while I watched Teen Titans go. At the time, I had a cat named Marty who was very, very old and fat and sad. One morning, after watching an epic battle between Starfire and Raven, I looked down and saw a lifeless Marty lying on the floor. A pool of blood slowly spilled out of his mouth and onto the wooden tiles. I don’t remember much after this and I don’t remember being sad at all. This was my first encounter with death. I understood what had happened to Marty, but I did not feel anything. I didn’t know how I was supposed to feel because I hadn’t seen anyone go through it. I had no reference and therefore was not able to mirror what a normal reaction to witnessing a death would have been.

Now that I’m 17, my understanding of death has grown and evolved exponentially. I’ve done a lot of thinking over the past couple of years and I now know that there is not one specific, “normal” reaction or response to death, seeing someone die, or hearing about someone who has died. It’s all weird, so it’s all normal. Death is a really hard thing to grasp for anyone at any age. I find it really interesting that the only times I’ve ever been confronted with death have been physically directly in front of me. Watching death happen is a very rare and unique experience that has truly changed my perception and understanding of dying. I don’t really like to think about the concept of an “afterlife,” but I am interested in grief and death in a physical sense. This film is about how grateful I feel for being able to sit with dead bodies because though it sounds strange, it has been insanely beneficial in my grieving process by @presleydraws

MomBird is here!!! I am very happy to finally show my film from Film Week that played on Thursday! This probably was my most stressful and time consuming film ever but i’m pretty happy with it and I appreciate all of your support so so so much!!! #iwilldrawuforatooney is my new summer project i have been working on to make some extra cash for uni, to push myself out of my comfort zone, and to practice my drawing skills! thank you to the wonderful people of Trinity Bellwoods park who called me over! (and to my wonderful friend sofie for accompanying me on this journey + filming) these were only 2 of my park drawings but i had lots of people come up to me on my way to the park as well. also… tonight i was generously awarded the gr 12 shaftesbury award for this film and i could not be more grateful! Shaftesbury and the film program at esa have supported me so much throughout my highschool years I truly feel like the luckiest person ever. Thank you all for being so kind to me always it really makes me want to keep doing this forever and ever and ever.
