Every collector faces the same silent question before a book moves anywhere: is what is wrong with this comic fixable, or is it already the ceiling?

That question is a scale. Most collectors load both sides equally and call it a coin toss. The two sides do not behave the same way under professional evaluation.

One side is treatable. Creases, bends, spine ticks, surface dirt: these are structural and surface defects, and they are exactly what professional pressing and cleaning address. Recoverable, addressable, in scope.

The other side is permanent. Color breaks, missing paper, ink-level damage: no pressing pass changes what is already gone at the material level. This side is the ceiling, and it sits outside any service scope.

Here is the part that trips people up: the two categories can feel identical in the hand. The gap between treatable and permanent is not always visible to the collector holding the book.

A complimentary analysis is the step that loads the scale correctly. Before any work is committed, we name which side each defect belongs to. That is what turns a submission into a real decision instead of an assumption dressed as one.

Black suit Spidey showing up everywhere! #marvelcomics #spiderman #venom #igcomicfamily #igcomiccommunity by @pressingissues.comics

Every collector sees the certified grade. Almost none of them see the moment that decided what grade would ever be possible.

The slab is the visible tip. Below the waterline sits the sequence that actually set the ceiling: the condition read, the surface evaluation, the defect classification, and the handling chain that protects everything the preparation recovers.

A complimentary analysis before any work begins is not a formality. It is the moment a book's realistic ceiling gets named. Everything that follows answers to that read.

Cleaning and pressing are techniques applied to a read that already happened. Without the analysis first, technique is guesswork applied to a book whose character is still unknown. The order matters, and it is not reversible.

That is why our workflow is evaluation-first. The analysis is not a preamble to the service. It is the service. The grade a grader eventually assigns was largely decided before the book ever reached them.

Start with the analysis. The grade follows from there.

Choosing just one is harder than it looks when it's your own key book on the line before grading, so which one are you naming in the comments?

Ever wonder what actually happens to your comic between the day it lands on our desk and the day it ships back for grading? Here's how we press a book without creating a new defect!

1. Inspect Every Book First: Before any heat or pressure touches your book, we give it a physical diagnostic. We check the paper type, the cover coating, the dirt and any existing damage.

2. No Drafting Powder: We don't use the old drafting powder dry-clean method. That powder can abrade the surface, lodge in the paper, alter the gloss or leave residue behind.

3. Era-Specific Settings: Golden Age, Silver & Bronze Age and Modern cardstock covers each get their own treatment. We handle every book individually, so there's no single dial setting for all of them.

4. Calibrated Heat, Gradual Press: We press under calibrated temperature and pressure with specialized equipment, and household irons never touch your book. Signed books get surgical-grade buffers, so there's zero ink transfer.

5. Controlled Cooldown: Your books never come out of the press while still warm. We regulate temperature, humidity and cooldown to prevent edge curl, rippling and spine roll.

6. Before/After Photos: Every job comes with before-and-after documentation and photo updates along the way. You're never left waiting anxiously in the dark.

The bottom line for us: a book should leave in no worse condition than it arrived. Pressing can't promise a grade. Careful prep gives each book its best honest presentation.

Why do I love this cover so much? #marvelcomics #comicbooks #ghostrider #igcomicfamily #igcomiccommunity by @pressingissues.comics

Storing a rolled spine flat, under weight, with patience: it is one of the most reasonable-sounding ideas in the hobby. We have seen the books that arrived after years of trying it.

Spine rolls are a structural defect. They form because the paper fibres along the spine have been displaced from their original position. Flat storage applies passive, uniform pressure. What it cannot do is apply the controlled heat and precision that actually move those fibres back.

Bends and folds respond to technique, not time. Every season a book spends in a box under weight is a season it is not being evaluated against its actual grade ceiling.

A book that looks stable in storage is not the same as a book that is submission ready. What the evaluation reveals is whether what felt like recovery was ever happening at all.

Professional pressing corrects spine rolls and structural issues while preserving the original condition of the comic for grading submissions. Correction and preservation are not in conflict when the process is precise.

If a book in your collection has been waiting for storage to do the work, send it for evaluation. We will tell you exactly where it stands.

What an awesome cover on this milestone Cap issue! #marvelcomics #comicbooks #captainamerica #hulk #igcomicfamily by @pressingissues.comics

Your sleeves are doing their job. That does not mean the books inside them are ready for a grading submission.

Bagging and boarding stops new damage from arriving. A collector who sleeves carefully is already ahead of most. But protection only guards the future. It does not address anything the book was already carrying the day it went in.

Storage readiness and submission readiness are two separate achievements. A book bagged and boarded for years can still carry surface contamination, structural creases, or a condition ceiling that no amount of careful shelving was ever going to change. The sleeve preserves the moment the book went in. It does not improve that moment.

That is the part collectors miss: defects accumulate quietly, sealed inside the very protection designed to help. A book can sit in perfect preservation condition and still be nowhere near its grade potential.

CGC certification verifies what is genuinely present in the book at the moment of grading. Preparation before that moment determines whether the grade matches your expectations.

This is why every comic at Pressing Issues goes through a complimentary value analysis before any work begins. A book's surface story and structural story are not visible from the outside of a sleeve.

Stored well is a great start. If you want to know what your books are actually carrying before you submit, the complimentary value analysis is where that clarity begins. by @pressingissues.comics

Dollar book no more! First Blackheart used to be $5 now $10, will it see $20? #marvelcomics #comicbooks #ghostrider #igcomicfamily #igcomiccommunity by @pressingissues.comics

There is a persistent fear that pressing changes a comic. Here is what it actually changes, and what it is designed never to touch.

Professional pressing targets a specific, bounded set of physical imperfections: bends, creases, dents, and spine rolls. Every one of these sits in the non-color-breaking category. The ink record your book carries is never part of the equation.

Controlled conditions are not a marketing phrase. Controlled means every variable governing your book's structure is set and monitored. That boundary is precisely what separates a professional press from a guess.

Pressing does not alter a comic's original condition for grading purposes. It improves presentation by resolving structural imperfections while keeping the book fully eligible for professional CGC or CBCS certification.

Before anything moves at Pressing Issues, every submission receives a complimentary value analysis. That evaluation is where the boundary between what pressing can achieve and what it cannot is drawn clearly, before you commit.

Know what pressing actually does before you submit. Start with a complimentary value analysis.
