✨Artist Spotlight: Jack O’Rourke✨

Jack O’Rourke is the band leader and drummer behind Press Start. Currently working with the acid jazz ensemble Nimbus Sextet to serving as music director for the incredible jazz and blues artist James Emmanuel. His musicianship spans beyond the stage, extending session recording for film and with renowned talents like Cathal Murphy, Lucas Gilchrist and Dank Mango.

-The Birth of Press Start
While studying in Edinburgh, Jack recognized a gap in the Scottish music scene: a lack of fresh, inventive interpretations of video game music. This realization gave birth to Press Start. But this isn’t your typical cover band—far from it. “We don’t simply echo familiar 8-bit tunes for nostalgia’s sake,” Jack explains. Instead, Press Start transforms classic game soundtracks and tracks that are considered “deep cuts”, elevating them with rich musicality and bold new arrangements.

-Why this is important?
Scotland has long been at the forefront of jazz innovation, and Press Start tries to carry that legacy forward, fusing digital soundscapes with live performance in a way that is both groundbreaking and deeply rooted in tradition. Jack’s work challenges audiences to experience video game music as more than just background sound—it’s an art form in its own right: dynamic, expressive, and endlessly reinterpretable.
