GREEN READING - HOW EXACT DO YOU NEED TO BE?

Everyone wants to know how precise does your ability to feel slope need to be to be have a chance to make the putt. It’s a good-news-bad-news scenario. Let’s start with the good.

In testing, playing a 2% slope worked well for putts ranging from 1.5-2.3%. That’s a healthy range of slopes that you can play 2% and the putt still works out. That should be comforting.

Now for the bad news. You need good speed for any of this to matter.

But there’s a light at the end of the tunnel! The range of ball speeds at the hole range from 1.1-1.3mph. That window is a very acceptable with putts finishing roughly 6-18 past the cup.

So, for all of you players new to green reading or ESPECIALLY the ones who have said they can’t be exact enough… Relax. Give it another go. And know you have some room.

As for the lip out, the 1.1mph ball speed on the 2.3% slope doesn’t work out. Sometimes good putts just don’t go in. Welcome to golf.

Welcome to strategies to putt better. #PrestonsPutting

Honored to be selected for the @golfdigest Best Young Teachers list for the 2027-2028 edition!

Many thanks to my peers who voted on the list and think enough of a putting guy to keep him around a little longer.

None of this happens without all of you - players, teams, coaches, and the family and friends that have supported and trusted in me for many years.

There’s too many to list of those who have had a hand in helping along the way, but if we’ve had dinner or a drink together, you know who you are. Thank you.

Cheers to making one more every round! #PrestonsPutting

Do you have a blueprint of your putting stroke saved that you can reference when your stroke gets off? Developing this is critical to becoming a consistently good putter and getting back on track quickly.

Here’s just a few key points you should know:
1. Distance from ball
2. Where you want your eyes to fall over the ball
3. Amount of spine tilt/flexion
4. Lie angle of the shaft
5. Ball position from the face on view

If you don’t have these dialed, shoot me a DM 📬and let’s get rollin’

Thanks @prestonsputting for the assist here 🎯

LIVE LESSON - TIMING AND TEMPO

Are you paying attention to how slope changes your stroke changes inside 10 feet? #PrestonsPutting

You can be a smooth operator inside 10 feet too. And it starts here:

I’m always watching how players are adapting their stroke to the changing conditions, especially when we have a controlled environment to best observe patterns and not just tendencies in “one-take” on course viewing.

CP has a tendency for the stroke to get short and fast. That problem really presents itself from inside ten feet when we shift to uphill putts. After leaving the first two short on the uphill 7 footer, we talked about stroke length and how an increased backswing size allows for sufficient time for the putter head to get up to speed.

Then we brought that idea back to the flat 7 footer and had a similar discussion. But this part of the chat shifted to the audio, more so than the visual. When the strokes are synced, you can hear the difference in the impact interval. With good stroke length and tempo management, these should sound identical.

So if you don’t have technology to check your stroke timing, find one of your blue prints and sync it side by side like we’ve done here.

And if you don’t have a blueprint, click the link in bio for getting started with online lessons or visiting me in Orlando. #putting #puttingtips #golftips #carlossainz55 by @prestonsputting

LIVE LESSON - PUTTER LENGTH MATTERS

Are you trying to fit your putter, or is your putter built to fit you? #PrestonsPutting

It’s almost every lesson that the putter length doesn’t quite match the setup, especially for junior players. I see them being given 34” putters and adjusting their setup to fit the putter. That comes at the cost of poor setup, speed management, and start line.

This video shows some of the issues of having a putter that is too long. It starts with the posture and the player standing too upright and excessive arm bend. This inhibits movement and hinders speed management.

The long putter not only forces the arms into more bend, but also raises the shoulders. Add another item to list of things that can cause speed problems.

If you’re seeing a fitter that says “just get comfortable and fits a putter length to wherever your hands are,” make sure that they have a good understanding of the mechanics behind arm bend, forward bend, and how those impact putter movement.

Note: Someone asked why the cover photo is a close up of the grip. If you didn’t think how long the putter is influences the hand and wrist alignments, think again.

LIVE LESSON - Spent some time with @edmundbrod during the last trip to New Jersey. This transformation was a product of understanding trail side structure and how it relates to movement. #PrestonsPutting

First, we looked at how the trail shoulder worked almost vertically during the backswing. That limits a player’s ability to create arc or depth during the backswing. In turn, we see the loop in transition as the torso turns in the forward stroke.

From the face on view, the right arm separates from the torso. While I wouldn’t recommend pinning the trail arm to the body, not having enough external rotation in the trail arm may have been a product of the steep trail arm and caused start line and speed issues.

The trail arm only putts focused on turn/depth with the trail shoulder. We see immediate changes in arc and face rotation. The stability from those changes allowed Edmund to create speed much more reliably and manage start line.

DM me if you’d like to get together in New Jersey later this summer and experience top tier putting coaching!

This weekend, we were fortunate to welcome Preston Combs @prestonsputting to Fiddler’s Elbow for The Putting School!

Preston shared his expertise on green reading, speed control, and start-line direction, giving our members valuable tools to hole more putts and lower their scores.

Working with players across the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, and Korn Ferry Tour, Preston brought a wealth of knowledge and insight to the experience. Thank you for spending time with us and helping our members take their putting to the next level! ⛳️ taken in Fiddler's Elbow Country Club by @prestonsputting

THE PUTTING PICTURE - STRATEGY

There’s so much to be said about visualizing the putt. Look at the cup, the entry point, the apex, spot putting. And that’s just to name a few. What works best for your game may be the difference between making and missing. #PrestonsPutting

If you’re not sure where to start, let’s work from the cup backwards with some easy options.

1. The Entry Point: See a spot on the edge of the cup where you think the ball might enter. This is good if you’re routinely missing putts high.

2. The AimPoint: If you are starting to use a line on the ball, keeping an eye on where that line is pointed can be very helpful. This goes nicely with the person who feels “every putt is a straight putt” and “let’s then slope do the work.

3. Intermediate Target or Spot Putting: Making sure you hit your start lines on the course is a lot easier when have a strong sense of the initial target. If you want to make sure you’re picking that spot accurately, join The Patreon page.

Tons of great content on performance, trainings, and things to help you better understand your putting. #putting #puttingtips #puttingcoach #golftips by @prestonsputting

THE PUTTING PICTURE - POINT OF SEPARATION

Ever wonder why the picture isn’t picturing? Maybe your ideas of how the ball is behaving isn’t as accurate as it needs to be because you don’t understand “Point of Separation” #PrestonsPutting

A friend of mine, Biv Wadden, rest in peace friend, shared this idea with me many years ago at a Flatstick Academy conference. Years later, @quinticgolf allows us to clearly see and define that point to help educate players when the ball is actually leaving its initial start line.

I see this problem a lot during lessons when I ask players to show or describe their interpretation of how the ball is going to travel to the cup. If the anticipated picture is incorrect, a player can try to force a certain speed that doesn’t match up with the physics of what is getting ready to happen. That can present conflict.

For the full video, click the link in bio and join The Patreon page. Parts 1-3 in The Putting Picture are available this week.

Shout out to @peakperformance.ab for “The picture isn’t picturing” quote.

To the Washington fans and players, you all were 2nd in the league in fumbles last year. Stop giving my old man more gray hairs and fix that. Please and thank you 😂
