Working across sculpture, drawing, painting and installation, Lucinda Elias’ work is concerned with moments when the mundane becomes magical, exploring the porous line between real and imagined to interrogate how adulthood functions in a contemporary context.

Lucinda’s work teaching creative writing to children and her background in literary studies guides a research practice grounded in words, particularly engaging with the intersection between academia, fiction, and folklore - the spaces where truth, myth and opinion become muddled and mystic. Storytelling is at the fore of Lucinda’s process, taking a view of narrative as cyclical and conversational. Her works invite joy and curiosity, and ask the viewer to interrogate their perceptions of what we find eerie, charming, childlike or otherwise.

‘Where do the ducks go when the pond freezes over?’ opens Wednesday 5 August, 6pm

The god given gift of a level gaze, the blurred sides of the tunnel named Yari, slip back like sands on the shore, then water off a cliff. There is the big grey swarm of my bedsheets there is blonde sunlight, there is dust, there is giant crashing waves in the neighboring oceans of my eyes, there are hammers there is velvet. I can watch my slouching angels dance in time to something I can’t hear I can cry laughing.

Everything behind me can be trusted to stay there and come see me when they’re in town, turning themselves to prayers somewhere deep in my machine, conspiring with the fates to help their enthusiastic children. The eyes, and the hand holding them, jump like dragonflies at the fancies of colour, content and the clouds formed by everything that has been. Bouncing. Pushed forth by the heavens, so big in my peripheries. The throughline, like the red waxen rope moves words and images with wings like swans in the water.

- Yari Buckingham

Olivia Summerhayes is an emerging artist and arts worker based in Naarm/Melbourne, with a background in Graphic Design and Public Programs.

Exploring the tensions between flesh and feeling, Olivia’s practice looks to the intersection of self, femininity and class.

Initially grounded in focused life drawing studies, Olivia’s practice is underpinned by a raw sensuality and humanism that invites viewers to contemplate the body as both a vehicle of tender expression and a site of complex political exchange.

Evolving to encompass abstraction, her practice also looks to the demarcations of the body as a means of exploring limitation, boundary, and what lies beyond.

Inherently multi-disciplinary in approach, Olivia draws from her background in both figuration and design. This foundation informs a sense of structure, balance, and material sensibility in her work across drawing, printmaking  textiles, installation, sculpture, photography, and video.

We are beyond excited and invigorated
to be collaborating with Liv and to present her new body of work on steel.

‘Between Flesh and Metal: A Lovely Scarring’ is a new body of work by @livsummerhayes opening @bardsapothecary on Wednesday the 14th of May.

The exhibition will feature a series of twenty works on found steel with surface markings that oscillate between figuration and abstraction.

The series, developed over 6 months, forms a dialogue with the transience of memory, flesh and demarcations of time, calling into question that which is felt and experienced outside of linear time and knowing.

In the absence of narrative, each work exists on a sensory plane where gestural mark making is born out of feeling and embodied knowledge.

DM us to RSVP and for pricelist.
