Back at school or work can mean more than catching up. Many childhood cancer treatments can affect thinking, learning, or memory later on. The last treatment isn’t the end of the story. According to the National Cancer Institute, over 60% of childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer survivors experience adverse physical, psychosocial, or behavioral outcomes months or years after treatment. Behind that number is someone learning how to live with what cancer left behind, even when everyone else thinks the hard part is over. Keep checking in after treatment ends. Listen without expecting someone to be “back to normal.” Survivorship deserves care, research, and support, too. Today’s reflection.🤍 On a cold winter afternoon, the beach is where I can finally breathe. The air is crisp, and it fills me until I feel whole again, as if everything will be okay. I watch the waves fold onto the shore, gathering sand, stones, and seaweed, then laying them down in its own distinct pattern. Each wave births a unique shoreline, just as each breath I take gives me clarity to begin anew. Where a child lives should never decide whether they get a chance to grow up. Yet the World Health Organization reports that fewer than 30% of children with cancer are cured in most low- and middle-income countries. In high-income countries, where comprehensive care is generally accessible, more than 80% are cured. That gap reflects barriers to diagnosis, treatment, medicines, and supportive care. It has nothing to do with how hard a child fights. Every child deserves access to care.
