Back in 2014 I was able to do something which I had been working on for the previous two years: a photo shoot with cars and the last flying Avro Vulcan @spiritofgb. Thanks to @jaguar and @jaguardaimlerheritage.trust we had two cars with us which spanned the flying career of the aircraft. It was hectic, but ultimately very rewarding. This is one of the best memories of my career. I drove this Opel Ascona 400 rally car twice. Why is this car significant? In 1982 it helped @walter.roehrl win the World Rally Championship. My first encounter with it was when I drove it from @opel at Rüsselsheim to the test track in Dudenhofen in a snowstorm. In April. On Michelin slicks. The second time was several years later, in Austria, on melting snow. The pictures from Dudenhofen were taken by my late friend, Bartek Szyperski. I felt a bit like James Garner for a day. I was able to drive a single-seater Crosslé 90F race car at Circuit de Charade in France where much of John Frankenheimer’s “Grand Prix” movie was filmed. The track in French volcano country, near Clermont-Ferrand, is a truly daunting, undulating circuit with virtually no runoff and rough concrete walls looming close to the tarmac. It was called “the French Nürburgring” back in the 1960s, and with good reason. Throwback to 2019 when I drove an Aston Martin DB11AMR on the surviving segment of the Brooklands race circuit banking and on the Finishing Straight. This happened because I wrote a story featuring the intrepid Count Louis Zborowski who not only raced Aston Martin cars on the circuit but also heavily invested in the company. Without him there would be no @astonmartinlagonda today. Slithering on the slippery concrete of Members Banking and bouncing on the uneven surface of the Finishing Straight, I thought of the brave men and women who had raced there.
