There’s so many different paths you can head down when ‘designing’ your own home, and one struggle I hear often from clients is: “I don’t know where to start?!!”

With this old country cottage (turned epic Bach Pad!) we established a super simple goal to be our north start in planning: A space where my client could simultaneously chill out peacefully on his own being surrounded by things he loved, and at the same time, also be proud of his home when it came time to hosting BBQ’s and parties with friends and family.

This 2-part plan is what kept us aligned to his needs and also to the house we were working with. When we’d get off track or feel something was ‘missing’, we’d just come back to our main goal and see if the issue was ticking one of those boxes. You can try this tactic too!

In the end, it turned out everything he’d hoped for, and though simple in design, it really was a charming, character filled (and actually very beautiful) masculine space 🖤🖤

If you’ve been hanging around here for awhile, you might remember the story of my heart and ego getting ripped to shreds a year ago when I decided to present a big project of mine (for the first time) to industry magazines and editors… only to promptly receive nothing but big fat No’s, Nope, Don’t Want It, No Thank You, You’re Not For Us Full Stop replies 😵‍💫😵‍💫

Gah. And after promising you sneak peeks of this High Country Homestead Project for years (yes, we battled through Covid port shutdowns for a looong time!) I couldn’t bring myself to share ANYTHING because my creative confidence was so shot and I felt like such a fool. My brain couldn’t comprehend why they ‘hated’ it, when my country client’s couldn’t be happier!

They started with an open, white, blank slate and together we transformed their house into such a beautiful, joyful, worldly family home reminiscent of all their stories and memories from living and holidaying abroad, and then settling back home in the bush. But alas, you, my dear Insta friends, pulled me back up with such divine support and I’m so thankful and appreciative of you (still!) for doing that!

So… here’s to the first snippet and here’s to remembering why I do what I do. I finally feel OK to share a project that I dearly loved and was so proud of the fact that I could help my clients fall madly in love with their home! 💫

And just like that… he’s off to boarding school 😭

You know it’s coming. You prep, you organise, you talk about it, you buy the uniforms, you try and find contacts or friends who are going to the same school for them to meet before day one… heck, you’ve been saving since the day they were (literally) born.

But there’s nothing quite like the tug on that heart string - actually, the entire chest cavity! - of when reality hits and you kiss him goodbye and say ‘Love you!’, and walk out of the dorm, and down the stairs and though the courtyard and then through the car park and then drive the endless hours home in the dark… knowing there’s no looking back and he’s off to conquer the next chapter of life - without you! 😭💙

So lucky. So fortunate. But still. It hurts us Mummas doesn’t it?! And Dads… right hand buddy won’t be home for 6 years - and if then? It’s been a really fun year for Jocko, 12 looks good on him. The teen years to come will be fabulous, I know and I’m excited for him. Gah. So many emotions 😂

So to the other slightly-emotionally-unstable mums out there this week - I feel ya, see ya and thank the fairies that we are going through this together!

Now off to learn a new dynamic at home with these other two ratbags and see if the fighting increases or decreases, or just goes sideways 🥹💙

Look, though there’s dust and heat and a drought - there’s no time to pout these holidays, because we’ve got 13th birthday’s to celebrate with mates and bikes and kids-only back paddock camping expeditions; and 11th birthday party outings to Wet ‘n Wild and the movies and the mall with girlfriends.

And now we’re in Charleville for the 967th rugby league carnival we’ve driven to this year where it’ll be hotter and dryer and even more dustier (so maybe a tiny pout by me…), but the kids?

Living their best life. 💫💗💙

If there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s calming the farm of emotions a client moves through when they’re in the thick of it! It’s a fair muscle to massage that one of trust… TRUST in the creative process. Trust in THEIR creativeness. Trust in the TRADES they’re collaborating with.

But when you do, and when you can get to a place where every pivot feels like it’s meant to happen; every time we took away or added in an element; every small decision that we ACTED on, then let it lead us to the next… this, this flexibility in the creative process, is simply called trust.

Have your overarching goal (ie. Insanely Beautiful Streetscape) - keep it in mind the whole way through - but allow the path to achieving it to be one big, winding, flexible road.

Trust the PROCESS! You won’t be disappointed xx

Am I a fisherwoman?
No.

Am I someone who learns how to spool a reel, tie a leader knot, drive 10 hr round trips to take my child out for the day to find new fishing spots on the North side and get eaten alive by midgies and touch the gross stinky bait and buy mcflurries to eat on the bank and sit there in silence for hours or chat for hours about what type of fish are in this particular creek or in that river mouth and then attempt to chat about the first three terms of boarding school and then decide not to ruin a good day out so topics go back to fishing and motorbikes and holiday plans… then drop him back in and deal with a slightly pained (but getting stronger), very warmed heart the whole lonesome drive back home?

Yes. Yes I am. 🫶🏻🎣

Come with me again for a quick afternoon stroll through this ol country cottage-turned-epic-country-office space we’ve been working on for the past year.
I know, I know, you’re probably getting tired of my progress updates, but I just couldn’t help myself smile and feel all the feels today as I dropped in to unpack more boxes of goodies.

Was so cool to see Steph and her team of queens all in there working and chatting, coffee machine grinding, phones buzzing… it’s going to be SUCH a positive workplace! 🙌🏻🥰

Reminder: Wash. Your. Plants!

Just go ahead (procrastinate some more) and scrub alll that dust off those poor leaves this week so they can breathe!

This gorgeous fiddle leaf was bound for styling a corner in the new office project… but not in a million years was I allowing it to set foot in that space until all the dust and grime from nursery life was washed off 😅

Contrary to popular beliefs, I don’t actually think our home always reflects ‘who we are’.
That teeny tiny laundry bench (that I bang my head on every time I pull a load of washing out of the machine underneath) only indicates the size of my patience after a long and arduous day… but the visuals of that old laundry is NOT “me”!

The smashed bedroom window to the left of front stairs? That simply reflects Bella’s inability to hit the soccer net with her latest aim. AINT NOTHIN TO DO WITH ME!

So if you happen to have stopped scrolling and are reading this - and you feel half the problem with making decisions around your home is the pressure feels too much to get it right or get it wrong ‘as a reflection of YOU’… chill.

It happens over time. Slowly and steady. One little win, turns into two. One cute little score, might lead you to a bigger investment that really DOES encapsulate you and your essence. Then the process repeats.

Go steady. Take the pressure off needing to get it right EVERY time. Release the hold that other’s judgment might have on you about the current state of your home - or developing style - and just start creating (and loving) little moments in it, instead of the whole thing.
