Les Claypool’s thumping and muting stamina exercise “Lacquer Head” off 𝑨𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒑𝒐𝒑 🤯

Posting this one in honor of - and in defense of - including Primus’s divisive ’99 album in “Where Do I Start? A Beginner’s Guide to Primus,” the piece I wrote for @liveforlivemusic ✍️ (you can read it now at the 🔗 in my bio or their page)

I called it Les’s most formidable part since “Tommy the Cat” and that’s the truth pal. Once you get the slap-mute-pop-mute pattern down, it’s a fun groove to lock in on… until the sextuplet (?) bass solo. You can see me struggle to match the recording exactly, but after enough takes, I figured the struggle deserved to make the cut 😅

Give it a shot, start by playing the pattern slow as an exercise, and don’t get bogged down if you don’t nail it at album tempo. A Carl Thompson bass doesn’t hurt either.

This week, Dr. Josh Bald of Primus Tracks joins me to step deep into the wonderfully warped world of Primus — a band that never really fit into a category because they spent their entire career bending, twisting, and outright ignoring them.

From the early slap-heavy chaos of Frizzle Fry to the conceptual storytelling of The Desaturating Seven, we’re building a 10-song playlist designed to trace the full arc of Primus: the funk-metal experimenters, the surreal storytellers, the prog-adjacent architects of groove, and the band that somehow made “weird” feel like a cohesive musical language.

This isn’t a “greatest hits” exercise. It’s about mapping the different eras, textures, and philosophies that define the band — one track at a time. By the end, you don’t just hear Primus — you hear how consistent experimentation can become its own kind of identity. Love them, question them, or just try to keep up… there’s really nothing else that sounds like this run of records.

Happy 30th birthday to Les Claypool & The Holy Mackerel Presents Highball With The Devil, released 27 Aug 1996, the first of a variety of solo efforts bearing the Colonel's name. After an extensive Punchbowl tour cycle and a Primus lineup change, Les put out this record of songs that he stated he would not inflict upon Primus. The record boasts numerous guest appearances, including Jay Lane, Joe Gore, Adam Gates, Mirv, Henry Rollins, and Charlie Hunter.

The touring band included Brain on drums, with Mirv and Adam on guitars/backing vocals. The Holy Mackerel toured in 1996 and has popped up a few times over the years, including NYE 2024.

This is a truly special project that has certainly carried its charm over the years. Hey, Interscope Records, give us a vinyl release!

I am lucky to say that I WAS THERE for the Glasgow and London shows and got to witness enthusiastic audiences. So great to speak with some listeners and supporters, including the ultra-dedicated Cap'n Crunch. Here's hoping Primus return after releasing a new album!
