🖼 Time Collapse by Heather Huston, part of our current exhibition "Looks Good on Paper..." | Guest Curated by Nancy Jacobi

"Time Collapse is a series of woven silkscreen prints about grief. The inspiration for making the work came from the repeated act of holding and comforting my child while also remembering holding my stillborn baby. I've woven together the same print so that the image starts to fall apart and echo itself, recalling the same gesture repeating itself at different moments in time and pointing to the complex emotions embedded in the action itself. Weaving is a way to intimately connect these two moments and repeated gestures in time. The paper itself is soft and cloth-like, pointing to the home and textiles while still being sturdy enough to support a printed image." — Heather Huston

I’ll be showing a few recent studio experiments @auarts as part of the Works in Progress symposium this Friday. They’re all works on newsprint, some sewn and layered. They’re not usually work that i’d show but sometimes it’s nice to think with my colleagues about the messy middle. I’m making new prints and wrestling with ideas that have been floating around in my head for awhile though I feel rusty and not quite sure they are doing what I want. But it’s been good to be in the studio again and the only way to get to the work I want to make is to keep making work. by @printerbird

My work was included in the most recent MAPC Journal vol. 36 (Liminal). It features one of my plexiglass works about living in an unmoored, chronically ill body. I’ve been around a lot less for the past while but for a good reason: I’ve welcomed a daughter this summer. Since she was premature, I’m keeping her away from crowds and can’t attend much so I’m sorry to miss all the art events but this is just a season like any other (and one that I’m enjoying). My printmaker side can appreciate the repetitive nature of newborn life. But where the repetition in the printmaking process grounds my body so that my mind can wander, the repetition of caring for a baby is keeping me present. Time feels both slow and fast. Slow, in that I’m doing the same thing every few hours even into the night. Fast, in that I look at photos from just a few weeks ago and she doesn’t even look like the same baby, she’s grown so much.

I’m trying not to will the future to come faster as I’ve spent so much of my life doing but sit in the now and just enjoy her and who she’s becoming. It was a long journey to get here so I’m trying not to rush it. ❤️
