Our beloved Tara passed away on October 14, at 13 years and 9 months young. We are heartbroken.

Tara meant everything to me, my husband, my brother, and was loved by our family and friends. She had a way of making everyone fall in love with her, her sweetness only rival by her love of frisbee and swimming.

For nearly 14 years, she was by my side through everything. We included her in as much of our lives as we could, and she was always front and center in every photo—never just a dog, but family.

Tara had her quirks that made her uniquely ours. She loved napping in the bathtub, finding the muddiest puddle, and knew exactly how far (or badly) I’d throw the frisbee. She was a charmer, winning over everyone she met. And with those quirks came her nicknames—Tarita, Mamers, Peanut Head, Old Lady Bones—but my favorite was always “Ma-ma.” Our frisbee-obsessed, smart, and sweet, sweet Ma-ma.

Tara was my first dog, and I never expected how much she would shape my life. They say a Border Collie isn’t the best first dog, but I was ready. Every day, no matter the weather, I trained and played with her, and our bond grew. That bond is what landed her a Milkbone ad, which helped me buy my first home—how many people can say their dog did that?

Her absence has left a hole in our hearts. The routine we shared—everything just stopped. I didn’t realize how much we talked and sang to her until she was gone. We miss her so damn much.

To everyone who met her, played with her, or showed her love—thank you. I hope she knew how deeply she was loved.

It’s hard to believe how quickly things can change. Our 13-year-old Tara has always been young at heart, but her arthritis has taken a toll on her left hind leg, and now she can no longer run like she used to. Last week’s frisbee game turned out to be her last, and it breaks our hearts. But as my brother said, she’s an athlete who’s simply ready to retire. We’re doing everything we can—medical care, x-rays, and starting her on Librela (pain meds). Now, it’s all about mental stimulation and swimming to keep her spirits high.
