PERIPHERAL VIEW - Russel Crotty · Tim Ebner · Ned Evans · David Lloyd · Steve Schmidt at CMAY Gallery, 5828 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036
info@cmaygallery.com

Presented in conjunction with a solo exhibition by John van Hamersveld

Exhibition Dates: October 10 - November 25, 2026 - Opening Reception: Saturday, October from 3 - 6 PM

Peripheral View brings together five artists—Russell Crotty, Tim Ebner, Ned Evans, David Lloyd, and Steve Schmidt—who share a connection to surfing, but whose work approaches that experience indirectly. Rather than depicting surfing as a sport, lifestyle, or recognizable subculture, each artist allows it to enter the work tangentially, as one influence among many. The diversity of their individual practices is central to the exhibition. by @prjctla

JOHN VAN HAMERSVELD - Beyond the Wave at CMAY Gallery, 5828 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036Exhibition Dates:

October 10 - November 25, 2026 - Opening Reception: Saturday, October from 3 - 6 PM

CMAY Gallery is pleased to present Beyond the Wave, an exhibition examining John Van Hamersveld’s transformation of the wave from recognizable image into abstraction. For more than six decades, Van Hamersveld has occupied a distinctive position within the visual culture of Southern California, moving between fine art, graphic design, music, surfing, printmaking, and public imagery. Rather than treating these areas as separate disciplines, his practice developed across them simultaneously. Paintings, posters, murals, prints, and commercial projects became parallel forms of image-making, connected by a consistent formal language.

In Beyond the Wave, the wave becomes a point of departure rather than simply a subject. Initially tied to the ocean and the culture of surfing, it gradually becomes a vehicle for investigating line, repetition, rhythm, contour, color, and spatial compression. As the image is reduced and reconfigured, representation gives way to structure. The wave becomes less an image of nature than an abstract system of movement. by @prjctla

Los Angeles, CA — CMAY Gallery is pleased to announce ESCAPE, an exhibition bringing together over 40 contemporary artists whose works engage three enduring artistic themes: landscape, seascape, and cityscape.

To escape suggests release, movement, and the possibility of entering another condition of being. In art, escape does not necessarily mean flight from the world. More often, it offers an invitation to enter another way of seeing it.

The idea of escaping one’s own reality into the realm of the artist is a powerful and longstanding part of artistic practice. For thousands of years, artists have depicted the landscape as a way to transport viewers beyond the immediate facts of daily life. Over time, this impulse expanded into related traditions of seascape and cityscape. Each of these genres has changed dramatically in style, subject, and intention, yet all have consistently offered viewers a passage into another realm of perception. by @prjctla
