Not every amazing thriller gets the attention it deserves.

These are some of my favorite reads that I don't see recommended nearly enough. If you're looking to branch out from the usual bestseller lists, I'd definitely start here.

A little about me.

Hey, I’m Rachel. The face behind ProbablyMidChapter.

I’m almost always mid-chapter. I’m a wife, a mom, and I work full-time from home, which means my books get paused… a lot. Audiobooks mid-sentence. Ebooks left at 33 percent. It’s a system.

I’m a huge true crime and thriller fan. If there’s tension, secrets, or a twist I didn’t see coming, I’m in.

Audiobooks and ebooks are my go to because I’m usually multitasking something. I’ve recently found my way back to genuinely loving reading again, even if it happens in small, slightly chaotic chunks.

I love fast-paced, heart-pounding thrillers that make me sit there for a second thinking… what just happened?

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

And Jules… this was definitely too good to be true.

Lock Every Door – Riley Sager

I spent the first part of this audiobook wondering WHO pays someone that much to apartment sit and why Jules wasn’t asking more questions. It started a little slow for me, but once Ingrid disappeared, things finally picked up and I was questioning everyone.

I got chills more than once listening to this, and that reveal completely threw me. I’ve read enough thrillers that I usually have at least a theory, but I absolutely did not see that coming.

Not my favorite Riley Sager, but still a really solid, twisty read.

The first thriller to actually make me emotional. I was not prepared for that.

I thought I had this figured out several times. I absolutely did not.

Her Silence – S.T. Ashman

This hooked me from the description and kept me questioning who was actually telling the truth. I had a pretty solid theory early on and felt very confident about it… wrong.

I loved the strong mother-daughter relationship between Nicole and Lacey, but Dylan’s love for his mom got me too. There was so much heart woven into the suspense, and somehow it completely worked.

The ending shocked me, but more importantly, it felt believable. Beautifully written, twists that actually landed, and honestly, my only complaint is that I wish it had been longer. Also my first Kindle Unlimited read, so KU started strong.

I genuinely don’t know what happened during the last 20% of this book because my jaw was basically on the floor.

The middle lost me a little, but WOW did it all come together.

Drowning in Paper Flowers – E.L. Westbury

Ruby was such a strong FMC for me. She was fierce in her choices, blunt in her narration, and I really enjoyed being inside her head.

The multiple POV worked so well for this story, even if it took me a minute at the beginning to get everyone straight. And the family secrets? There are A LOT.

Definitely check the trigger warnings before going into this one. And whatever you do… keep reading AFTER the acknowledgments. Trust me.

We've all picked up a wildly popular book, wondering if it could possibly live up to everyone's expectations...

These actually did (for me).

This isn’t typically a book I would pick up, but I’m really glad I did.

And definitely go into this one expecting a slow burn, not a fast-paced thriller.

The Women in White – Sarah Pekkanen

I loved the back-and-forth timelines and how connected the women in the past felt throughout the entire story. Betty was wonderfully written, and Riley’s reactions to everything she uncovered felt believable.

The experiments and the way they affected the women’s lives added such an unsettling layer because honestly… parts of this felt like something that could have actually happened.

The twist caught me by surprise, but it still made sense once everything came together. A slow burn that was absolutely worth the payoff.

@exquisitely_bookish_ sent me Sometimes I Scare Myself by @jenevaroseauthor from my wishlist, and I was SO surprised when I opened it.

First of all… THIS BOOK. 😍 I mean, look at it. It is absolutely gorgeous, and as someone who loves Jeneva Rose, I have wanted this so badly since I saw it announced. I almost don’t want to ruin it by actually reading it. 😂

But more than the book itself, it genuinely means so much to me that someone I met through this little bookish corner of the internet thought of me on my birthday and took the time to send me something.

Bookstagram has introduced me to some truly wonderful people, and moments like this remind me how special this community can be.

No one writes messy relationships quite like domestic thriller authors.

Secrets, lies, dysfunctional families, and marriages that are anything but happy... these books had me completely hooked.

Amazon First Reads came through with this one.

I did NOT see that twist coming.

Watch Her Run – Jennifer Moorhead

I went so back and forth on Lucinda the entire time. And Virginia? Could not stand her.

I really felt for Jade and everything she had already lost, especially with her career being ruined and then feeling targeted during major moments in her life. The buildup is steady, but once that reveal hits, everything starts clicking into place.

Highly recommend if you love survival thrillers, isolated settings, and a twist that actually catches you off guard.

Sometimes the setting becomes its own character... and these books absolutely nailed the atmosphere. 🌲

Whether it was an isolated house, the middle of nowhere, or somewhere that just felt unsettling from the very beginning, these settings made the stories even more memorable.

This one took a minute to hook me… and then suddenly I was questioning EVERYTHING.

It’s Not What You Think – Clare Mackintosh

This was much heavier on the police procedural than I expected, and at first I wasn’t sure if it was going to be for me. But the further I got and the more that was uncovered, the more impressed I was with how cleverly everything was put together.

I listened to the audio and the cast was SO good. Multiple POVs can sometimes get confusing on audio, but I never struggled to follow who was who. It honestly felt like I was listening to a documentary about a real case unfolding.

And the reveals. I can’t say anything without saying too much, but they just kept coming, and somehow everything fell together. Even the title was so well done once you understand the full story.
